*Echo*
"Hey, new girl. Wait up!" Echo turned around, her dark eyes locking on a skinny girl running in her direction. "You walk fast," the skinny girl laughed as she reached Echo, "Choi Sooyoung, nice to meet ya." Sooyoung flipped back her brunet hair, popped her gum, and stuck out her hand.
"You're shaking my hand?" Echo chuckled and locked hands with Sooyoung. "I'm Echo."
"Yeah, I heard you are from America. You guys shake hands there, right?" Sooyoung tilted her head to the side and gave Echo a questioning look.
"Yes," Echo smiled, "We do."
"Can I see your schedule?" Sooyoung poked Echo and Echo nodded, handing Sooyoung the paper in her hands. Sooyoung scanned Echo's schedule and her eyes lit up. "You are in my class!" Sooyoung said with excitement. "Come on," Sooyoung grabbed Echo's arm, "I'll take you there." Sooyoung pulled on Echo's arm, causing Echo stumble behind her as they ran to class. "Sorry I dragged you." Sooyoung apologized once they reached the door of their class.
"It's fine." Echo smiled softly. "It didn't bother me." Sooyoung laughed in response and lead Echo into the classroom.
"So, how did you end up here?" Sooyoung asked as she walked to her seat. "Oh hey! You are sitting with me." Echo chuckled at Sooyoung's excitement and began her explanation.
"I was born in America, and then I lived in Korea with my grandma for a few years until she passed away. Then I went back to America to live with my parents and they said when I reached my last year of school, I could decide where I wanted to live, so now I'm here living with my aunt." Echo explained as she sat down next to Sooyoung, in the back of the classroom.
"Oh, how cool. I've always wanted to go to America." Sooyoung smiled and continued. "I want to see the Golden Gate bridge, the Statue of Liberty, the Seattle Space Needle, Disney World..." Sooyoung's voice faded away as a tall and attractive boy entered the room, catching Echo's attention. Echo watched him closely as he made his way to his seat in the middle of the class. Echo's eyes grazed over him as she took in his appearance. His ebony hair that hung above his eyes, black jeans that were ripped and clung to his legs tightly, his black hoodie that hung from his shoulders, and old vans that adorned his feet. For a reason, unknown to Echo, this boy intrigued her. She continued to stare at him, noticing the piercings in his ears. "Hey! Earth to Echo." Sooyoung's voice caught the attention of a few students in class, including the one Echo had been admiring. He turned in his seat and gazed at Echo and Sooyoung, his face blank. His dark eyes met Echo's for a second, causing her breath to hitch before he turned back around, uninterested. Once the rest of the class also lost interest Sooyoung poked Echo. "Why were you staring at him?" Sooyoung asked with a whisper.
"I don't know," Echo shrugged, "intrigued I guess. Who is he?"
"His name is Jeon Jungkook. He moved here about a year ago, in all that time I have never heard him speak. Not once. He doesn't even speak when the teachers ask him a question, he will write the answer on a piece of paper and hold it up. It has gotten him into trouble a few times, but he remains silent." Sooyoung explained. "So, you should probably let go of your interest, nobody has ever gotten him to speak. Some people used to think he couldn't comprehend the language but he has the top grades on exams, so that theory was buried."
"Oh." Echo gazed at Jungkook, who was looking down at his phone. Jungkook must have felt her gaze on him because he looked up and glanced at Echo, that same blank expression on his face. Echo blushed in embarrassment, breaking eye contact with Jungkook. When Echo looked at Jungkook again, his gaze was turned back to his phone.
...
"You are going to what?" Sooyoung almost choked on her salad. It was lunch time, and Echo had noticed Jungkook sitting alone in one of the corners of the cafeteria. She decided that she was going to sit with him even though he didn't seem interested in people.
"I'm going to sit with him. Maybe he just needs a friend." Echo shrugged and picked up her tray and rose to her feet. Sooyoung rolled her eyes at her new friend, but she stood up also.
"I might as well join you." Sooyoung chuckled and grabbed her tray. "Let's go, but don't be surprised if he's silent." As Sooyoung and Echo made their way to where Jungkook was seated, other students watched them curiously. Once they reached Jungkook's table, whispers of surprise could be heard throughout the cafeteria. Jungkook, who was busy with his phone, didn't seem to notice the two girls standing in front of him.
"Hello." Echo said softly and Jungkook looked up, his blank expression unchanging. "Um," Echo gripped her tray nervously, "Is it okay if we sit here?" Jungkook nodded slowly, surprising Sooyoung. 'Thanks." Echo sat down quickly, and pulled on a shocked Sooyoung's arm. "Sit with me Sooyoung." Echo smiled.
"Oh yeah, of course." Sooyoung laughed nervously and took her seat next to Echo.
"So, Jungkook right?" Echo smiled and Jungkook just nodded in response as he took a bite of his food. "Um." Echo looked down at her food and bit her lip, thinking of what to say next. "Can you believe all the homework we have gotten on the first day? I swear, I'm going to be drowning in it." Jungkook looked up at Echo and furrowed his brow, but didn't say anything. All of Echo's further attempts to get the boy to speak failed; Jungkook was undeniably silent. Even though Echo failed to get Jungkook to speak, she never left the table.
