the jelly felt cool against my skin as it was carefully applied.

"excited?"

the nurse, who was a good 40 years older and seemed to have stories of children of her own, smiled motherly at me.

"well, should i be?"

she chuckled, her laugh warm and familiar.

"i know that look. whether or not the baby's father accepts it, the decision is up to you. as a mother, you have a heavy responsibility, but a child can be the greatest joy in your life."

"did you have children?"

"i couldn't bear any, so my husband and i adopted three."

"oh, they must be wonderful."

"quite."

her face lit up as she moved the transducer around.

"well, good news! they're perfectly healthy. of course, we'll have to run further tests, but they are seem to be in great shape. you are only starting your second trimester as of-"

"wait, they?"

"i guess it's a surprise, but you're having twins!"

"i'm having twins? twins... as in multiple kids. twins."

i had to take a moment to process it.

"oh. oh my god! i'm going to have two beautiful babies!"

"that's right."

"but... i don't know if i'm going to have them... that's two lives on my hands."

a wave of regret flooded my emotions.

"i think it's best not to worry about what he'll think. he'll come around, i'm sure."

"really?"

"men can be so immature and indecisive sometimes, but honey, they will love and protect your children more than you ever expected."
