They say you should never meet your idol, but when your idol is a super villain, you kind of know what you're getting yourself into.
Her name was Rachel. Six years old, loved pink dresses, diagnosed with leukaemia. I work for the make a wish foundation, and it's my job to grant little kids wishes. I'm like a modern day fairy godmother.
With most little kids, their wish is to meet their favourite football player, or their favourite superhero. Maybe spend a day in the life of a police officer, or go on a helicopter ride. Not Rachel. No, Rachel wanted something a little different.
When I first met her, she was sat opposite my desk, next to her father, playing with a toy unicorn, completely minding her own business. I gave them both a big friendly smile and sat down.
"Hi there, I'm Adam. What's your name?" I asked the little girl. She looked up at me with big round eyes and a grin spread across her face.
"I'm Rachel, and this Mr.Sparkles." She said and showed me the unicorn.
"How can I help you Rachel? What wish do you want me to grant?"
"I want to meet Karther!" She exclaimed and grinned. My eyebrows furrowed at this. I must have heard wrong. This adorable young girl, who had a toy unicorn called 'Mr.Sparkles', could not possibly have said she wanted to meet the super villain Karther. Super villain. Not just a regular villain, but a whole new level of evil. A big cup of villain with extra villain on top.
I looked over to her father who just gave me an exhausted shrug. I looked at the girl again, staring up at me with big round eyes. I looked at the machine attached to her, pumping chemicals upon chemicals into her tiny body in a desperate attempt to keep her alive.
"I'll see what I can do." I sighed and scribbled it down in the new notebook I'd bought especially for my new job. Jesus Christ. A super villain. First day on the job and she asks for a super villain. Why couldn't it have been playing with rescue puppies or meeting Cinderella at Disney land? But she's going to die soon. That's why she's here. If a supervillain is what she wants, then a supervillain is what she'll get.
...
I walked into the cafeteria at lunch, going to grab a cup of coffee. I had been searching my brain for a way to grant Rachel's wish, and had so far come up with nothing. I decided to ask some of my other colleagues for help, so walked over to the most friendly working one. She was sat on her own by the window, bright yellow top on with her hair in a half up-half down bun. She looked as though she was going to the beach instead of work, with her flip-flops and shorts, beach bag under the table. Hell, she even had sun glasses on.
"Hi, can I sit here?" I asked. She looked up at me and gave me a mega-watt smile as she nodded.
"I'm Clover Sallow, but everybody calls be Clo."
"Adam. If you don't mind me asking, why aren't you sat with the others?" I inquired hesitantly.
"Ah... well, the thing is." She paused as though debating what to say. "They're not the nicest people out there. In fact, they're really quite horrible. The only reason I still work here is for the kids."
"Actually, that's kind of what I wanted to ask someone about. Have you ever had a particularly hard wish?"
"Nothing too bad, why what did they ask for?"
"Well, my only kid so far asked for something that seems quite... challenging. You know the supervillain Karther?"
Her eyebrows shot up a bit and she looked quite taken aback. "She didn't ask you to defeat him did she?" She asked slightly shocked.
"Not exactly. She kind of asked to... meet him." Her eyes widened slightly before narrowing and taking a quick glance over at the group of other employees.
"I know what's happened." I tilted my head in confusion at this, signalling for her to carry on. "They dumped you with the hard case. You'll be getting a lot more similar to this. They give the impossible cases to newbies. I said they weren't very nice." She furrowed her brows and I slumped back in my chair. They gave me an impossible case. That explains it. Gosh, how on earth was I supposed to grant this little girl her wish.
"Do you know anyway I could make this happen?" I asked her desperately. Her face scrunched up in thought before she sighed.
"I guess... well there's a few bars that Karther might go to. But it's dangerous. He's unpredictable."
"Where are they, I'll check them out."
"I'll tell you on one condition. I come with you." She jutted her chin out and I could see the fierce look of protection in her eyes.
"Of course, anything to help grant Rachel her wish."
