The first things you should ever learn on an instrument are fingerings and scales. They will help you find notes, and learn what they sound like. The numbers 1, 3, 5, & 8 are the arpeggio. These scales have concert pitches and French horn pitches. For example, if someone says to play the concert pitch B-flat, the horn should play their F. This is the way I learned the scales, because on the double horn, you may do any fingering you find for that note.
Our first scale, C/G, is below:The fingerings to this scale are as follows:
G- open
A- 1 & 2
B- 2
C- open
D- Thumb key, 1 & 2
F#- 2
G- open
The second scale we will learn, which is F/C, is listed below:The fingerings to this scale are listed below:
C- open
D- 1
E- open
F- 1
G- open
A- Thumb key, 1 & 2
B- Thumb key, 2
C- Thumb key, open
The third scale we will learn is B-flat/F, which we will go over: (I couldn't find a picture for this scale.)
F- Thumb key
G- open
A- Thumb key, 1 & 2
B-flat- Thumb key, 1
C- Thumb key
D- Thumb key, 1 & 2
E- Thumb key, 2
F- Thumb key
Now, we will get into the fourth scale, which is E-flat/B-flat:
B-flat- 1
C- open
D- 1
E-flat- 2
F- 1
G- open
A- Thumb key, 1 & 2
B-flat- Thumb key, 1
The fifth scale we will tackle is the A-flat/E-flat scale:
E-flat- 2
F- 1
G- open
A-flat- 2 & 3
B-flat- 1
C- open
D- 1
E-flat- 2
The sixth scale we will learn is the D-flat/A-flat scale:
A-flat- 2 & 3
B-flat- 1
C- open
D-flat- 3
E-flat- 2
F- 1
G- open
A-flat- 2 & 3
The seventh scale we will go over is the G-flat, or F#/C#, or D-flat scale. I like to think of it as G-flat/D-flat, but you may think of it as either one:
D-flat- 3
E-flat- 2
F- 1
G-flat- 2
A-flat- 2 & 3
B-flat- 1
C- open
D-flat- 3
The next scale we need to go over is C-flat, or B/F#, which is listed below:
F#- 2
G#- 2 & 3
A#- 1
B- 2
C#- 1 & 2
D#- 2
E#- 1
F#- 2
The next scale is A/E:
E- Thumb key, 1 & 2
F#- 2
G# or A-flat- 2 & 3
A- 1 & 2The final scale we will learn is D/A:
A- 1 & 2
B- 2
C#- 1 & 2
D- 1
E- open
F#- 2
G# or A-flat- 2 & 3
A- 1 & 2
Now that you know the major scales, you will find it easier to find what notes sound like. Minor scales should be your LAST priority right now.
