I'm shocked. What in the hell is this guy doing at my table? He's invading the only private space that I have in a school day. Didn't anyone give him the memo? I'm weird and crazy and highly unlikable. Why sit with me?
I look over about three tables away from me where a group of girls are snickering. They probably set this up. They're waiting to see how long it will take for me to fuck up. Unfortunately, me being me, it won't take to long.
I casually stroll to my table. Not hiding my distaste towards what's about to unfold. I take my seat next to the guy, take out my books and look straight ahead, hoping more than ever that the damn lesson will just begin.
"You must be Catelyn? I'm Cam." He looks at me, almost beckoning a response from me. As though he thinks I don't have the ability to speak, or that I'm not even real.
"It's Catherine actually, " is all I say back.
"It's an honour to meet you Catherine."
"That's Cat to you. Don't use my full name again."
"Understood."
We maintained the silence until class started. It was good to see how quickly he caught on. We weren't friends and we probably would never be, so why bother talk at all? It's not like we had anything in common. He was some rich guy and I was and ordinary nerd trying to get through my high school days until I finally got out of here and started living. He'd probably inherit the shares of some major company whilst I would have to start from the bottom and work my way up like a normal person. Not to mention the obstacles of being female and black. Racism and sexism proved more evident in this world than anything else. But none of this is a problem. It just makes everything more challenging and I love challenges. He, on the other hand, has probably never been challenged in his life. We are from two separate worlds.
In my world, however, I have an annoying Mr Kem, my science teacher, who not only has a name that resembles a division of the subject he teaches but also loves to give out assignments on the first day of school. He tells us that it needs to be done in pairs. I smile internally, knowing that there's an odd number of students in our class so I can end up working on my own.
The bell rings and I pack my things and walk out the door before Connor can catch up and carry on with his nonsense. I see him talking, well actually flirting, with some new girl. Which will probably keep him occupied enough to allow me to make my get away. I quickly slide out the door. I take about twenty fast pace steps before deciding I'm safe.
"Cat! Wait up!"
I grunt. I was pretty sure that I was home free. Apparently not. I am honestly not up for ione of Connor's games. So I just carry on walking.
"Cat. Hold on I just want to ask you something."
I can't help but commend him for his persistence. I finally decide to just stop and listen to what the dweeb has to say. I turn around and shock myself for the second time in one day. My mind actually does a double take. It's not Connor. It's Cam
