Aurora's POV
Wandering into Troy's bedroom from the adjoining bathroom, I sighed from exhaustion. I'd never had such a draining day in my life.
Troy abruptly laughed, causing me to eye him curiously. "What's so funny?" I wondered out loud, giving him a skeptical look.
"It's just that, that's usually the reaction people have after having to deal with my family for extended periods of time." He said, propping his head up on one hand while lying on his side. He definitely wasn't lying when he said having to carry a conversation with not only his mother, but also his twin sisters, was draining – though I'd never tell him so. Assholes head was already inflated enough. Our conversation caused me to think back to dinner, particularly the awkward exchange that had ensued about twenty minutes in.
"So. What are you intentions with my brother?" One of the twins asked right after we'd all dished food onto our plates. I still wasn't sure who was who – which was awful being as they weren't even identical. I was caught off guard by how blunt she was being. She'd never even uttered a single word directed to me up until this point.
"Evan." Poppy warned sternly while simultaneously shooting her a warning glare from the head of the table. "What did I say?" She growled out. I watched as Mr. Carmichael wrapped his arm around his wife's shoulders before rubbing up and down her arm to calm her.
"What! I just want to make sure she's not one of those girls. Like that one... what's her name, Brock?" She snapped her fingers while trying to recall the forgotten detail before glancing over to her youngest sibling.
"Naomi?" He asked before taking a large bite of his steaming meal.
"Yes! That's the one." She said while pointing in his directions. At the mention of her name, my mood instantly soured. Having noticed this, Troy sprung into action.
"Enough!" He sneered towards both of his sisters – the other one having been glaring at me from across the table the entirety of the time I've been sitting here.
"It's okay." I mumbled softly, delicately patting him on his thigh to smooth his ruffled feathers. "I like your brother very much. While I'm not sure what made you assume that my intentions with him were ill mannered, I can assure you they're anything but. If we're being honest here, it's me you should both be worried about." I'd teased before knocking my shoulder against Troy's.
I smiled, remembering how I'd called Troy a shit head just minutes later. In my defense, it was after he'd teased me in front of everyone just to see me blush. But, apparently in Carmichael terms, that translated into you being family. I wasn't going to question it because after that the entire dinner took a whole new, and much lighter, tone.
The sound of a loud whistle jerked me back into reality. Snapping my eyes over to Troy, I gave him a blank look.
"I've been trying to get your attention for a few minutes." He stated with a raised eyebrow, obviously wondering what I'd been so deep in thought about.
"Sorry. I was just thinking about dinner and your sisters and all that." I mumbled while running my fingers through my knotted, wet hair. His eyes darkened immediately, but I wasn't sure why. Following his gaze to my chest, I noticed that the cold, air-conditioned room had caused my nipples to harden and peak. Crossing my arms over my chest, I blushed deeply.
