Tears brimmed in my eyes as I looked into my mirror, watching Vega clasp the pearl choker to my tan neck. "Again, thank you." She simply smiled, and kissed my forehead.
I stood, straightening my skirt, as she took my veil and placed it atop my head, held in place by my tiara. I walked from my room into the hallway where Sir Se'ev and Everett were waiting.
Mother said I could have any 1 guard walk me down the aisle, and he's the one I chose. One to walk beside me (Everett) and one for cover behind us (Ze'ev). I loved Everett as family, but Ze'ev was one I'd never met. He was from the Outer Sectors and his name was Ze'ev Kesley. He was drafted into the Royal Guard 5 years ago, as a 13 year old.
Everett was on the brink of tears as he looked me over. "Hey Rett. Thanks for doing this." I said to my uncle. "Wouldn't miss it for the world Cinder."
Let me explain. My uncle Rett (my nickname for Everett) and I have always been very close. Ever since my cousin Winter and I became friends, Everett kind of took me in as his half-daughter. He treated Winter and I equally, and loved us as equals. Although we were not blood-related, he loved me as though we were.
So one day, years ago, Rett, Winter, and I were all walking through Artemesia, stoping and talking to younger children, purchasing candies, flowers, and bobbles from small-family-owned shops, and waving to families as we passed.
At one of the shops, I saw this small Earthen figurine. It was identified as a S.E. toy for children. It was a plastic doll that looked very much like me, but with a silver painted hand and leg. I picked it up and looked at her price tag. The ink was smeared, but I read only 2 words. Lihn Cinder. I found it odd, but approached the register with it anyways. The cashier smiled at me and was very kind, she even gave me the doll free of charge.
I took the doll home, and I brought her to my 'secret hideout' that only Winter, Camilla, and I knew of. I accidentally fell asleep there, which consequently caused a panic. Winter told Rett where the hideout was, and he found me, covered in cinder block dust. So the nickname came about, and stuck.
Ze'ev, however, was standing statue-like, very solemn. I held out my hand to shake his, and said "You must be Sir Kesley. It's an honour to meet you sir. I've heard good things of you." "Thank you miss." he responded, "You look very beautiful. Emperor Kaito is very lucky." I blushed and nodded my thanks.
Everett held his arm out for me, so I linked mine through his. "Oh! Almost forgot! That would've been bad!" chuckled Everett. He took my veil in his hands, and placed half of it in front of me, obscuring my face.
I laughed at Rett, causing my veil to flutter and tickle my face and neck, causing me more laughter. After about 2 minutes, we headed off toward the Great Hall. After what seemed to be an eternity, we were cued to go. The hall filled with the sound of the music, the rustling of clothes as people stood, the creak of he large doors swinging open, and the gasping and sighing of people as I entered.
I looked through my one-way veil, happy no one could see in to see how big my grin was. The palace was beautiful! I looked up to see Kai at the alter, and I saw the amount of pure love and happiness plastered on his face. Even though we'd known each other for a month, I loved him more that I did the fake oxygen I breathed each day.
When I got to the altar. Everett kissed my hand, and patted Kai on the back, shooting him a quick glare that I could've missed had I blinked, but I was scared that if I blinked I might lose Kai. That this would've been a dream. This seemed too good to be true for anyone.
Kaito and I took each other's hands, and completely ignored he priest's droning on and on about commitment and love. I was drowning in his eyes that his hurricanes and storms below, but were so calm at the surface. I was being cut by the rigidness of his jaw and cheekbones. I was tangled in the black hair that sat atop his head, hidden partially by a golden crown.
I snapped back to reality as I heard someone in the crowd sneeze, and I listened once again to the monotone priest.
After the priest's bit was over, Kai raised my veil, and crashed his lips on mine. I heard a loud sob from the crowd as we kissed, and we pulled away to see the source. It was....Camilla?
