I ride in practice without a helmet but in shows I use one.
When a horse is at home it usually acts ok because that's where it lives and it's desensitized to everything. When a horse is at show it can be rowdy. There's a lot to worry about if you're a prey animal at a show. So they will most likely act up more at said show than the home arena..
