Max's POV
As Fang and I flew across the desert, we kept an eye out for a place to set up a shelter. We obviously weren't going to find a place like that in the desert, but it was worth a try. We just needed somewhere to get some rest.
I felt Fang's shoulder brush against mine, and I looked over at him. He was scanning the ground, averting his gaze from rock to rock, gathering details. This was how we found where to go if we ever got lost.
"Hey Max," Fang began. "There's a Canyon right there." I followed where his eyes were aligned, and there it was. A carved in cave on the side of a sandy mountain. We both looked at each other and nodded.
Fang's POV
As I looked at the ground, I noticed a decent carving in the side of a mountain. I signaled Max, and we begin to fly down towards it. I tucked in my wings, diving closer to the ground, feeling the wind zip past my feathers. I looked slightly to my left, seeing Max, her sun streaked hair traveling behind her. I felt the corners of my mouth tweak.
I sprouted my wings, carefully landing on the ledge of the cave, skidding across the surface slightly. Max landed beside me as I tucked my wings behind my back. I looked over at her. "How would you rate this place, eh?" She said to me with a small grin.
"Three stars I guess. Good enough for now." I commented. I took my backpack off my shoulder, tossing her a chocolate bar. "Heard your stomach growling." I seen her look away with a slight blush of embarrassment. "Thanks." She muttered. Then we both sat down.
"Fang.." I heard Max say as I was starting a fire. I looked over at her. "What are we going to do?" I raised an eyebrow slightly. "What do you mean?" She shrugged, looking down at her feet. "I.. I still have to save the world and everything.. I--"
"Forget the mission." I told her. "We can just be safe even if the world is a big mess."
Max's POV
I can't believe it. He told me to forget the mission. Again.
"Fang, we can't just leave everyone on this Earth to die!" I seen him tense up slightly. "Max..." I heard him softly whisper, making chills climb up my spine.
"I just want you to be safe. That's all I want."
I stayed quiet. For a little while.
"Fang... I have to do this.."
"No, Max. You don't. Me and you can just be safe somewhere. I.." He paused mid sentence which confused me. "I don't want to lose you too.."
I couldn't speak that time. I remembered... How the rest of The Flock died... I miss them, so, so much.
"Fang... I don't want to lose you either.. Or the world. I have to.."
He let out a slightly annoyed sigh. "Alright."
"Really..?"
"Yeah. I may not be able to change your mind, but I'll always have your back. But..."
"But..?"
He looked at me with a slight look of worry. "If you get too hurt... No more trying to save the world.."
"Fang, I--"
"Tell me you wont."
I sighed, and slowly nodded. "Alright.."
"Let's get some rest." He told me. "We're gonna need it to get to Dr. Martinez's house."
I nodded, and lay down on the cold cave floor. Fang lay down a couple inches away.
Fang's POV
A couple hours into my sleep, I felt something tickling my nose. I opened my eyes slightly, noticing it was a strand of Max's hair. "Fang.." She muttered. "I'm cold.."
She's still awake? I thought. I felt her press closer to my chest, and I stroked her hair, holding her close. She was right. It was chilly.
I seen how the fire was dying out, so I sat up. "Don't leave me.." Max mumbled. I looked at her, and her eyes were slightly opened, watery. I hesitated, but lay back down by her. Her body slowly turned around and she curled up with her hands on my chest.
"I won't.." I whispered, stroking the area between her wings. "I'm right here." I leaned down, and kissed the top of her head. Her eyes slowly closed back up, and I closed mine as well.
She's so cute when she's asleep..
Max's POVI woke up to the smell of something good.
I sniffed the air, and my stomach growled.
"Good morning sleepy head." I heard Fang say. "Is desert rat medium-rare okay?" I let out a tired smile. "Yeah.." He turned around, patting my leg. "Get up then." I groaned, sitting up. "Hmph.. And I thought Nudge wasn't a morning person."
I felt my heart sting slightly at her name. My little Nudge...
"Uh-Huh.."
Fang handed me a cooked up desert rat on a stick. "Thanks." He nodded. "No problem." I took a bite out of it, not bad. We've all ate desert rat before. I actually didn't know Fang could cook that well, so I decided to joke around.
"Hm... Not that bad."
"Better than your cooking. That's for sure."
I rolled my eyes, smacking his arm. "Keep it up bud." I warned him. All he did was give me his perfect lop sided grin. I looked away huffing, ripping off another piece of rat.
Fang's POV
Max was definitely not a morning person. You joke around with her, then she gets all sassy. I knew she was joking, but hey, when life gives you Max, savor the moments.
As I finished my rat, I put the stick into my backpack. I looked over at Max, and she was finishing her's up as well. When she finished it, she handed me the stick while picking her teeth. "Thanks for the rat, Mr. Mysterious." I gave her a look that said 'Seriously?' And she gave me a grin.
"What are we waiting for?" She asked as I slung my backpack over my shoulder. "Let's go visit my mom!" I looked at her. "What do you think I'm doing blondey?" She nudged me, and I grinned. "Let's go." I said, putting out the fire. And with that, we both sprouted our wings, jumped of the edge, and began flying towards Dr. Martinez's house.
