fateful summer

small waves flow gently along the beach and between our toes. we sit, naked, near the water. the beach is empty. this island paradise is ours.

you lay your head against my lap as we watch the waves, nature's music playing softly in the background. i place a loving hand against your head and stroke your long, silky brown hair. i untangle every perfect imperfection. my fingers burn from the powerful strokes.

you look up at me. every loving curve of your body suits you perfectly, as if your tailor had made you too perfect. you rub your soft hands against my blocky stomach and my lean muscles. a spark between us ignites like a firework before the end occurs.

the clouds in the sky darken. the rainbow that once represented hope and life in the blue sky above us disappears into dark clouds signifying destruction and death. we stand. you hold my left hand and i hold your right. one drop of this acid rain can destroy all.

one lands exactly in the middle of our grasp. we look at each other. horrified and upset for what we'd done. gracefully, we walk into the waves as the acid rain slowly disintegrates our hands, our arms, our torsos, our everything. our bodies, now dust, collapse against the thick black waves, accepting our fate for betraying the all mighty.

a snake slithers out of the waves and stares us in the face, right before our sinful eyes became one with the sand. in the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. for dust you are and for dust you will return.
