I start running toward the burning building. Students and teachers are standing outside, worriedly watching the flames as they engulf the school. Those who have been injured are being tended to while the principal talks on the phone to, who I assume to be, the fire department and paramedics.
Melody and Jasmine run out from the collapsing front doors, shortly followed by Grace. I bolt straight to them.
"Is anyone still in the building?!" I pant.
They glance back at me, each of them sporting a grave look.
"Everyone made it out." Jasmine says. Melody adds on;
"Everyone except..."
"Oliver." Grace finishes. "He went back inside to help someone who had gotten their sleeve stuck, and a load of debris fell on his leg. He's pinned down in the gym."
I take off. Everyone is shouting at me to stop and to wait for the firemen, but wI keep running.
As soon as I step through the doors, I'm overwhelmed with smoke. I run to the water fountain, prayed it still worked, turn it on, and wet the neck of my shirt. I then pull it up over my nose and mouth.
The school is unrecognizable, now. I look around. Flames lick at the walls and floor, hungrily. And then I see them. The gym doors. Jumping over flames and darting through gaps, I make my way deeper into the school with no regard of how I am to escape.•••
Once inside the gym, I scramble to find Oliver.
"Oliver?!" I cough out, over, and over, and over again, until...
"I'm over here!" Muffled cries echo from the corner. "Please, somebody help me!"
I pinpoint the exact location of the plea and loop my arms under a burning ceiling beam. Ignoring the searing pain in my arms as the flames eat at my skin, I use all of my strength to toss the beam aside. A foot. I lift a piece of rubble. Another foot and a leg. Slowly, I make my way through the pile of debris until Oliver is almost all free. His skin is red and he's covered in cuts, bruises, and burns. It takes all of my leftover strength to lift the pile of bricks off of Oliver's arm, and finally, Oliver and I can escape.
I help Oliver to his feet, and with a sharp inhalation, he collapses.
Unconscious.What will happen to Oliver? Will Lauren be able to get them both out of the school alive? Find out tomorrow with another chapter of; Am I Dreaming?
