**3 years ago (the end 8th grade)**

Nate's P.O.V

The Eight Grade Dance is only a week away. Mason had asked Erica and Bradley didn't want to ask Gaby so he asked me. I knew he was kidding when he asked, but that doesn't mean I didn't feel special and squealed like a little girl when I got home that day.

All Bradley and I are going to do is get ready together with a couple of the other football guys and their girlfriends. Then we'll get some food and go to the dance.

But still, Bradley Andrew Elton asked me to the dance. In a friendly 'no homo' kind of way which makes me sad, but I can easily get over myself.

The bell signaling lunch rang and everybody got up and walked toward the cafeteria.

I walked with a girl named Megan. She was really pretty and just about every guy in school wanted her, even some of the high schoolers. Megan and I are pretty good friends. Good enough friends that I know she hates all the attention she gets from guys.

"Megan! Megan! Megan! Megan!" I tugged on her sleeve to try to get her to give me her attention.

"Nate?" She poked my cheek and blushed. "What?"

"I have to ask you something." I smiled and her blush turned an even darker shade of red. It was like that one day last year I had made Bradley turn red as a tomato at football practice.

"Yeah?" Her face kept getting redder and redder until it hurt me to look at. A face should never get that shade of red.

"You're my friend right?" I looked her dead in the eye and she nodded her head. "Do you love me? Like a friend at least?" She nodded again. "Okay, one more question. What's your opinion on gays?"

"Oh, um, if this is your confession to me, then I think I'll cry." The red on her face quickly started to turn to a pale white.

"Why would you cry if it was?"

"Because I like you." She looked down at the ground and twirled a piece of her long dirty blond hair around her finger. "It is you confession, isn't it?" She looked back up at me with sadness clearly showing in her big blue eyes.

"Yeah, it is. I think I'm ready to come out." I smiled at Megan again and she wrapped her little arms around me.

"Go ahead Nate. If your ready then do it." She kissed my cheek and pulled me into to cafeteria where all the 8th graders had already gathered. Bradley and a few of our other friends were sitting at our usual table. Two seats, mine and Megan's, were still empty.

Megan grabbed my hand and led me over to the table. She sat me down in my seat next to my best friend and she went to hers, which is right across from me.

Everyone was staring at us. All the guys know Megan doesn't date and there she was with her hand in mine.

"Are you dating her?" Baylor asked. A look of pure jealousy washed over his face. If anyone were to successfully date Megan, it would be Baylor. The boy was determined to make her his.

"No. I don't bat for that team if you get what I'm saying." I looked down at the table as I gave him, and everyone else who was listening, a second to process what I had just said. Megan gave me a thumbs up and a reassuring smile. It didn't help make me feel any less nervous about the huge scene that was sure to unfold any second now.

"What did you say?" Baylor looked at me through narrow eyes. I know he heard me perfectly well.

My eyes met with his for a fraction of a second before going back to the table. "I'm gay."
