It had been seven years since Steven and Celine had chosen to join the circle. Their beginning reluctance to join had been overlooked, but they now had to hide the regret they felt. They had see their once friend Valentine descend into insanity on his quest to reshape the shadow world. He had devastated his own family by experimenting on his son, and when that failed he grew worse, trying to find someway to change it, make it right. When Celine became pregnant, he just went back to they way he had been before.
He decided this time he would try using a mixture of angel and demon blood, but he never could've counted on it being twins.
When they were born, Valentine just saw another failure. But then he remembered the Herondale family tree. Tessa Gray had been a warlock, and though the gene for magic hadn't shown in any of the newer Herondales, the demon blood could bring it out in whoever it went too.
Shortly after their birth the twins began to show signs as to who had which. Jacob (Jace for short) had light in his eyes that shown like the sun from the moment of his birth. His younger sister, Cassandra (Casey) had eyes that burned through you when she was mad. These however were the only signs of the experiments Valentine had done.
As they grew, whatever power they might have had remained dormant. Valentine tried to force it out of them, but to no avail.
After four years of watching their children be abused by this insane monster, the Herondales had had enough. They decided to leave for the sake of the children and the one now on its way.
