American Money -Børns

"Happy birthday
Dear Adeline
Happy birthday to you"
Everyone sang the wretched tune as they gathered around the kitchen counter. I smiled, taking in a gasp of air to blow out the candles. 17 of them, to be exact.

I wondered how many Elouise would have.

"Happy birthday lovie!" Mother exclaimed. Her delicate hands grasped my shoulders and squeezed.

"Thank you." I grinned.

Soon enough, a wish was made, slices were cut, and stomachs were full. I told my mother I didn't want a big party, I never have. Parties just weren't my forte and who would be there to celebrate?

I'm sure if I invited people from school they'd attend, though the awkwardness would be unbearable.

"Happy birthday, pink." A low whisper rushed. The hairs on the back of my neck stood as I rubbed my ear.

"I didn't know you were coming."

"Your mother invited me. I slipped in late after a business meeting." He spoke beside me as everyone chatted in conversation. It was mostly adults here, other than the two toddlers running a muck around the kitchen table. My eyes glanced around to see if anyone was watching.

"And how was it?" I sighed.

"The meeting? Pretty boring. Nothing compared to what it would've been if you were there."

"Harry, you know I would've escaped if I could've. My mother has a weird thing about birthdays. Always wants me home." I wasn't lying. My mother loved celebrating birthdays of anyone, especially her only child's.

"I know, darling. No worries." He smiled softly. A lazy smile that held words unattainable.

"What's got you smiling, styles?"

He shrugged, mimicking a confused child. "Everything's just been a little better, lately."

I grinned, my heart warming at the fact that this estranged, vile, son of a bitch is happy. He was my son of a bitch, after all.

The number of times I've run the idea of him through my head is countless. I've studied the papers, researched the facility, investigated the handwriting. Yet, I still want him. I love a mysterious man and hate the mystery.

Let my heart be free of shackles, let those of love and fear be lifted through the words of another. Let my sovereignty pass in the hands of himself. And I say if there is a god, let him dangle my cautious thoughts through clouds with silver linings.

I've heard they have play books for those types of things.

"I have something for you." I watched as he reached into his suit pocket. A small blue paper band lay on his wrist and I stare.

I'm confronted with a pink box placed in front of me. "It's not much, but I hope you'll find it interesting."

I thanked him, pushing the fact he didn't need to get me anything. I teared the pink wrapping paper, hands shaky as I was met with a necklace box. I peered up at him. "If this was expensive, I'm giving it back immediately." I threatened, Harry smiling and telling me to shut up.

I opened the small box to be met with a silver necklace, resembling a sound wave. My heart raced, a smile brought upon my face.

"I thought you'd hate diamonds, so I went with something a little more personal."

"Your voice." I grinned, grasping the necklace in my hand.

Harry pointed to the box again, leading me to find out what he would have said to put on the jewelry.

A white piece of folded paper lay face down. As I flipped it over, written in Harry's scribbled handwriting:

baby pink :)

"You made this? I mean, this is your wave?" I stuttered, gleaming with happiness as I reached out to hug him. I didn't care if anyone saw, it could've been passed off as a mindless gesture.

"Thank you, Harry Styles."

"Your welcome, Adeline Rose Vicet."

**

We were able to slip away from the party for a few minutes, Harry bundling me into his blazer as we walked the garden. It was frigid, cold enough where my uncovered legs were to be blue if I stood still any longer.

"Thank you for the necklace again." I started the conversation.

"You're welcome. Now stop thanking me, that's the 13th time in the past hour." His hand reaches and grabbed my shoulder as we walked.

"Sorry." I giggled.

The moon lit up the otherwise dark sky as I pointed to the blooming flowers. "How peculiar."

"Indeed." Harry stopped with me, taking in the sight of spring chartreuse flowers on a death winter's night.

"They match my eyes."

He scoffed. "Adeline, you have brown eyes."

I looked at him for a moment, waiting as he stared harshly at the flowers below.

"Harry, I've got green eyes."

He turned to me, his face holding an alarmed look while he reached for his chin in thought.

"No you don't, Come here" he beckoned. I walked closer, letting my eyes widen in the melting moonlight to show the entirety of my iris.

"Yes I do." I stated.

Harry gazed at me, the same look he had on his face when he's thinking. I continued to stare back with a different expression. He blinked severely after a moment, holding his tightened eyes shut for a mere second before opening them once again. The howl of the wind entered as his pupils shrunk with the presence of light.

"Green." He spoke. "Electric green." He didn't remove his eyes from mine.

Pls don't yell at me I'm sorry I'm shitty and haven't updated in forever.

The new semester has been kicking my ass and I've been out of my mind stressed. Also lax so I dont have as much time or energy for schoolwork therefore I don't have time or energy or inspiration for writing.

Anywhore, thank you for waiting and I really do appreciate those of you who vote and comment and read and message me saying how much you love the book. I can't thank you enough.

xx, Haley
