It had been a year since El had disappeared. Mike kept thinking why did she have to go so soon? She just got to know us and now... She's gone.

Every two days Mike sets out into the forest alone, setting up Eggos in Castle Byers. He knew El had been there in the Upside Down, so it would be a pretty good spot for her to find it she came back.

Lucas had gotten tired of Mike's shenanigans, despite gaining a large amount of respect for Eleven. As he would say, "the girl freakin' saved them!" During lunch Mike would think up a plan on how they'd find her. Most days, it would end up being something like this: "Okay so, we'll ride over to the forest at 7 to make sure we have enough time. Then, we'll check the box filled with Eggos to see if shes been there, and we'll sit there waiting with our walkie talkies. Once she opens the box in the Upside Down, we'll be able to hear her on this side. Finally, we can call out her name, and she'll come find us. I know she will!"

Yet the plans never worked and El never came. Mike was becoming desperate and irritable. The Snowball was coming up, and there had been no sign of her.

Mike grabbed a box of waffles and jumped onto his bike. He wanted to get to school early this time so that there wouldn't be anyone there when he arrived. People were just annoying now. Who needs people anyways?

Everyone annoyed him in general. "Where's your girlfriend?" "Haha I doubt this psycho girl actually existed." "I bet that Johnathan Byers kid killed her as well. Maybe she'll come back to life."

"Hey Mike! Wait up!" Dustin yelled, breathing heavily as he pedaled harder uphill. "Go away Dustin." Mike sighed, pushing harder on the pedals. "Cmon man, I can help! I mean... I'm always here to talk."

"You're never any help anyways. You just get in the way. Now stop following me and catch your breath before you pass out." Mike said. He spit his gum out into the road, who cares for laws?

Dustin rolled his bike to a halt. "Well shit. Way to make me feel special." He muttered under his breath.

Mike arrived at school, parked his bike, and sat slumped against the school's front doors. His head in his hands, he thought about El. I bet she'd lo- He cut his train of thought. No. I know she'd look stunning in one of Nancy's dresses. She's going to look so amazing when she comes back. I'll be able to wear my tux! Last year Mike bought a tuxedo just for the Snowball. Just for El. He smiled as he imagined the big night playing out.

"Hey, Wheeler." A voice spoke. Mike looked up and glanced around, spotting Troy. He scoffed and glared, "What are you doing here? It's not like you care enough about your education to get here this early."

Troy laughed. "I thought you'd be here, so I came. Not that you would care if I'm here." He walked over to Mike and held out his hand. The boy stared at the seeming friendly gesture, why would he want to be friendly to me? Mike sighed heavily and pushed himself up on his own.

"Leave me alone. You just want to make sure my girlfriend won't break your arm again." Troy's face shifted to a blank stare, his eyebrows raised. "Well guess what? She probably won't. She hasn't come already, so why worry?" Continued Mike.

"Now seriously. Go the hell away. Don't try being friendly with me again." He shoved past Troy and started walking, kids were starting to arrive anyway.
