It was a dark and cloudy day when I first saw her. She was pale, and looked lonely in her bright yellow dress. A few minutes later, I was allowed a break to go outside. Being the person that I am, I watched her for a bit then walked over to her.
"Um, Hi," I greeted awkwardly.
She just looked at me, skeptical and unsure of how to react.
I gave her another awkward look and introduced myself, "I'm Elizabeth, but you can just call me 'Liza. What's your name?"
She looked at me once more, then quietly answered, "Cedar."
I smiled at her, "Nice to meet you. You look about my age so that must mean you're around 14?"
Cedar nodded.
"Awesome do you go to school around here?" I asked.
She nodded again but smiled this time, beginning to warm up to me.
"I go to Valleydale Middle School," She told me.
I smiled, "I do too."
We talked and exchanged information, phone numbers and such, before my mother called me back inside to do chores.
I waved Cedar goodbye and told her I'd see her soon.

'Liza: Hey is this Cedar?
Cedar: Yep
'Liza: Awesome. I have to go now but I will text you later for sure!
Cedar: Alright. Bye
'Liza: Bye

She never told me much about her life now that I think about it. I never knew she had a brother, or that her mother had passed away two years after she was born , or even that her father was fighting in the war across the sea. I should've asked. I should've asked her a lot of things, how she was doing, why she wasn't around. I regret not asking these things now, they might have saved her.
