Cat Valentine cried herself to sleep the night Robbie left. Her mom didn't even come and see if she was ok. The next day, she didn't have the energy to go to school.
"It's probably for the best anyway," she thought bitterly, "Nobody really likes me. I am just the annoying redhead." And so she crawled back under the covers and slept for hours. At school Robbie noticed straight away that the small redhead was not there. He sent another text to her.
Cat? I know you're mad at me, but don't not come to school because of it. Anyway, I am always here for you. Am I allowed to tell Jade? Then Robbie collapsed on the stairs in the main hallway. He was such an idiot. Cat was the one thing that brightened up his life and he went and messed it up. Cat was too innocent for everything anyway. She was too pure for this world. That was what he loved about her. How the smallest things amused her. How she would never say any 'bad words' or understand any dirty jokes someone would say.
Robbie chuckled slightly, remembering when Cat cried in fear Andre would break her thumb off in a thumb war. How could someone have the audacity to hit a girl, never mind a girl like Cat. He winced, picturing it all in his head. Cat, sobbing loudly while a tall thin man towered above her. She would have cowered in the corner off the room, her tiny hands covering her face. Then he would take a vicious punch at her and she would scream.
A text awoke him from his daze. He looked at it eagerly. It was from Cat.
Can you tell Jade to come to my house? I think her phone is dead.He stared at the message for a few seconds and got up to find Jade. She asked no questions, just rolled her eyes at Robbie and stormed off. Robbie crawled to the janitors closet, and wallowed in sadness and despair. Once again, not doing anything about his feelings.
Jade was very worried about Cat. It was unlike her to not go to school, well, not without telling Jade. She had suspicions about Robbie being the cause of it all, but what could he have done? He loved her.
But when Jade got to Cat's house, she was anything but ok. Her cheeks looked hallow and her whole face was grey. She barely gave Jade a smile, never mind the usual hug.
"Cat?" Jade murmured when she walked into the younger girls bedroom. "Was Robbie mean to you? What's wrong?"
Cat sighed and shrugged. Jade walked over to Cat, inwardly screaming. She was, easily, the most impatient person on the planet and Cat tested her patience on the best of days.
"Can we watch a movie? I don't feel like talking." That was a first; since when did Cat not feel like talking? But Jade obliged and sat through, in her opinion, an hour of hell. The little mermaid. After it was over, Jade went back to school, although Cat refused to move from her bed.
"Right, Shapiro," Jade growled, pinning Robbie up by the lockers. "You have 10 seconds to tell me what you did to Cat."
"I didn't do-"
"DON'T YOU DARE TELL ME YOU DID NOTHING BECAUSE I KNOW YOU DID. So start talking. Now."
"Jade, honestly. Cat told me something, and I can't say what it was but I tried to tell her to do the right thing and she overreacted. That's all."
"Right. And why are you all sad? I am not really interested but you're lying and I want to prove it."
"Because she screamed at me."
"You are so dead Shapiro. Admit you're lying!"
"I am not lying!"
"I don't believe you and I will rip you apart, slowly and painfully, starting with your fingers." She snarled at him. Luckily for Robbie, Beck saw the shocking scene; Jade holding Robbie up by his arms, a good foot of the ground, and pressed against Tori's locker. He ran over and somehow managed to loosen Jades grip on the poor teenager so he could scuttle away."Babe, you have got to stop that." Beck said sternly. "He is our friend."
"But I am sick of it. For 5 years Robbie has whined about how much he loves Cat but he doesn't! I went to her house and she is absolutely distraught. He would not do that to her if he loved her. And I hate it. Cat has had enough to deal with in her life already and she doesn't need some geeky weirdo being mean to her." Jade ranted. Beck sighed. There was no stopping Jade when she was that mad.
"How about, you find out Cat's side of the story first. And if he really did make her that upset, then you have permission to hurt Robbie. Not kill, but hurt." Beck reasoned. Jade, although reluctantly, agreed with him.Meanwhile, Cat was home alone with her dad, who was, again drunk. He yelled at her to get in his van, and they were going for a little ride. Cat, as innocent as she was, knew that was bad, and told him she didn't want to. That was when he lost it.
"You little witch! Do as I say or you'll be sorry." Cat was frozen in fear. Her dad took off his belt and hit her round the face with it, 14 times, each time hurting more and more that the last until eventually, she blacked out.
