Now to clarify how black belt ranking works. First you have to get the Oreo belt which is the probationary black belt which is not the official one but first step of becoming one, the next step is 1st degree level 2 because the oreo belt means level 1 in a way and the degree belts have in one side your last name and in the other the Korean word of taekwondo. Now with the black belt ranking once in 1st degree is that in one degree there are 4 levels.

When you test you are the same degree rank but you level up in level rank, you usually have to wait 2 months and once you are a 3rd degree you have to wait 4 months because to be a 3rd degree, you must be 16 and older in order to get the actual 3rd degree belt and if not you get the probationary one and have to test again.
16 and older get many privileges, the color letters on the belt turn from red to silver and if you instruct the formal top becomes black instead of red.
Kids get red color letters, adults get silver and grand masters get gold letter coloring.
