"So where did you two go alone?" Andrew asked with a wink. I rolled my eyes and Nathan scowled. We were used to it by then.
Kathryn clapped a hand over her mouth. "No way!"
"What?" I asked, my cheeks beginning to burn.
"Yeah, what are you talking about, hermana?" Peter asked.
"Can't you see it?" she asked excitedly. "I can totally see it!"
"See what?" Peter and Andrew asked at the same time in frustration.
Kathryn practically bounced with excitement as we jogged along. We were on our way back to the village but we had gotten really sidetracked running away from the Angels.
"They're a thing now," Kathryn said sing-songingly.
Both Peter and Andrew's jaws dropped. I could definitely feel my face burning now.
"Nathan?" Andrew asked. "I don't believe that's possible. Is this the same guy we're talking about?"
Nathan's eyes narrowed as he shot him a glare so frightening, I would have run away.
"I don't think so," Peter continued. "I mean, sure, girls have liked him, but he'd never..."
"Shut up, guys," I defended, face still burning.
"Yep," Andrew said. "There's no doubt about it. They're a thing."
I didn't think my face could burn anymore but it did. I didn't know what was wrong with me. Everything even slightly embarrassing made me blush. It was an awful natural instinct to have.
I was spared further embarrassment as we entered the village. There were still five Angels in the street. I noticed one at the end, still yelling at the woman who had called for me to run. The other four lounged about, glaring at the other villagers who watched the scene, afraid to interfere.
Just as I was about to do so myself, Nathan stepped ahead and made his way towards the Angels. He almost blended in, except he was wearing modern clothing, unlike the rest of the villagers, and he had a more composed and purposeful attitude. Two of the Angels pointed to him and whispered. They still hadn't noticed us.
Nathan went straight for the Angel attacking the woman. His sword flicked out into his left hand. Before any of the other Angels could react, his shadow blade arced toward the Angel. The Angel barely dodged out of the way. Just as Nathan was about to charge it again, a blur whipped out from behind the building and knocked the Angel over the head. He fell like a sack of rocks. The blur paused only for a moment to reveal Nina. She smirked. Then she was off to fight the others. Shock was express on Nathan's face.
Nina had a unique fighting style. She could flick blades out of her crutches. Barely able to use her legs, she couldn't really touch them to the ground in a fight, which meant her blades couldn't stay out of she would lose balance. She would swing up with her right crutch, putting her weight on her left. She would flick the blade out of the right one and swing. After she made her slash, the blade would flick away and she'd maneuver away. Then she would switch blades. I was amazed at how well she did.
Once all the Angels were down, I hurried out, Kathryn, Peter, and Andrew hot on my heels.
When we got closer, the woman was sitting up, thanking Nathan over and over again for helping her. He was busy telling her that it was no problem.
The woman smiled. "Just like your brother," she added. Nathan froze, the slight smile disappearing all together. Then he nodded, still unsmiling.
"I have to go," he said a little stonily. The lady nodded as he offered a hand to her. The lady went on her way calling good luck and we made our way back to the ship. The crowd surrounding us slowly dispersed.
