Dan, 11 years old

"Amelia tried to kiss me on the playground today." Phil says. We're sitting at the kitchen table, eating cookies that Phil's mum made for us.

"What happened?" I ask.
"She said she wanted to kiss me and started leaning in so I yelled at her face and ran away." He says. I laugh, thinking of the pouty blonde girl reacting to Phil doing this.

"Why didn't you kiss her?" I ask. He shrugs.
"I dunno. Girls are weird. I don't want to kiss them, they're gross." He says.
"Same. Besides, the only girls who would kiss us are the unpopular ones who have no one else." I say.

"Yeah, but I don't care. I don't want to kiss girls anyway." Phil says.

"I might kiss one, but I don't really like them. They are all drama llamas and laugh at us." I say, in agreement.

"I would never ever kiss a girl ever." Phil says.
"Are you gay?" I ask.
"Isn't that bad?" He asks.

"No, my mum said gay means boys liking other boys and it's not bad because people should love who they love." I tell him.

"So why do people tell us we're gay all the time like it's bad?" He asks. I shrug.

"People are stupid." I say. Phil nods in agreement.
