Matt thought to himself while he got ready for the night. This is it. Tonight’s the night. I wonder. Do I look ok? What is she gonna day? His thoughts were interrupted by his door opening. It was his mom. “Oh! There's my boy! You've grown up so fast.” She walked over to him and put her hands on his shoulders. “It feels like it was just yesterday I was holding you in my arms. Now look at you! Going to prom with a girl.” He smiled. “Mom-” He was interrupted by his mother. “Ron! Come look at our son!” His dad walked in with a smile on his face, walking over to him. “Your collards crooked.” He fixed his son’s collar and shed a tear. “I'm not crying. Just sweating from my eyes.” Matt and his mom laughed in unison, then Matt hugged his father. They ate dinner and his mom gave him a flower for Emma. (Sorry. Mr. Author doesn't know the fancy name for it.) His mom walked him out to the car and opened the passenger door for him. “So, what's her name?” Matt's mom's curiosity finally broke through. “Her name's-” Matt trailed off. “Anat was that honey? Speak up. You're gonna have to in order to impress her father.” Matt laughed and looked in his mom's direction. “Her name is Emma.” He blushed a bit and turned up the music, listening and analyzing the lyrics with every letter. They arrived at Emma’s house and Matt's mom guided him to their front door. He knocked and a few moments passed by before a large man, who didn't know Matt, opened the door. “Matt, her father answered the door,” his mom whispered in his ear. “Good evening sir. My name is Matthew Taylor and I'm here to take Emma to prom.” He held out his hand, and shook the man’s large hand. “Come in. She'll only be a minute.” Matt walked in and his mom guided him to the couch. “Now, Emma has told me so much about you. So… You're blind?” Matt went a little pale at this question. “Y-Yes sir.” The father looked at him. “Well, I'm Otis.” Otis smiled at him as Emma came down the hallway and walked up to Matt. She was wearing a long, but thin white dress with glitter around the top. “Hey Matt.” She hugged the sitting boy as he jumped from her startling him. He handed her the carnation and she handed him a rose. His mother pinned it to his shirt. Just then, Emma's mother walked in. “Ok you two. Before you leave, I want pictures.” Matt stood up and put his arm around Emma’s waist as she put her arm over her shoulders. Her mom took the pictures and the next thing they knew, they were at the dance. Emma pulled Matt over to the photo booth and took a few pictures with him. They walked out just as Thomas, Jessy. And Gabby showed up. Thomas was with Gabby, Jessy with a girl from a different school. All three pairs stayed on the sidelines until the fateful hour of 10 struck. Emma was getting bored so she took Matt by the hand as a slow song came on. She placed his arms around her hips and she put her arms over his shoulders. They danced. They made the night young again. And just as the song was about to end, Matt asked the question that would change everything. “Emma, I've been thinking… And I really need to ask you something.” Emma knew what the question was before he said anything. She knew from here on out, things would change. For both of them. “Go ahead.” Emma had a smile of pure innocence across her face as her cheeks turned red. “Well, we've known each other for 10 years. And I think, I want to amp up this friendship. So, I would be honored, if you…” He was cut off by Jessy pulling him off to the side. “Dude, don't mess up. Don't let anything distract you, and for heaven's sake don't stutter.” He patted Matt on the back and brought him.back to his date. “So, before I was so rudely interrupted,” Emma smiled and laughed a little bit. “Would you do.me the honor, of going out with me?” Thomas blushed a little bit before preparing for any answer. “Of course I will.” Emma smiled and hugged him, then reach up to give him a quick kiss on the cheek. Matt turned red with embarrassment as the song ended. They sat on the sidelines in each other's arms the rest of the night.
