Like you couldn't already tell, it's the apocalypse. And that last book? That was just the beginning. That was just me telling the story. And this one? This is me living the story. Nightmare, I should say. Because this is more than just a story.
This is my life. My reality. My nightmare.
Things are in routine now. And trust me, when things are in routine, I feel more human.
"One." I wake up yelling for Norman or Sean.
"Two." I find no one, and clench the dust under my palms.
"Three." I close my eyes again as my dog Rugger sits near me.
"Four." I stand.
"Five." I pick up my knife.
"Six." I kill a Walker or two and go in search of breakfast.
"Come on Rugger." I say stretching my arm.
We begin to walk, steering clear of any potential threats that would drain energy from me.
Our surroundings get less crowded with trees, and in moments, me and Rugger approach a large field. I look around, and get the impression that it's an old renaissance fair. There are Walkers everywhere, but their armor and old dresses help me figure out what was going on. Plus there's a worn down, large, painted sign that reads "23rd Anniversary! Wyoming's very own Renaissance Festival!"
I inspect the area trying to figure out what to do. Should I go through it and try to get some new weapons and armor and possibly some food? Or simply just leave and never come back.
"It's not worth it." I whisper quietly to Rugger who looks like he's about to pounce.
But as I'm turning to leave, my eye catches something on display: A sword.
Maybe it's the way that the sun glinted off of it, or the thought of a challenge, but something makes me want to get to that display case.
"Maybe it is worth it..." I say, gripping my small knife.
I begin to devise a short plan of how to claim the silver sword, and then jog back into the woods.
I need to get around the festival to the blue and white castle building on the other side. The sword is right next to the front door, so if I can just get through a back door than I can go through the building.
Rugger follows me closely, keeping his eye out for any stray Walkers. We come across none and finally get to the back door.
"Okay. First, the door." I say, staring at bolt keeping the doors shut. "Any ideas?" I ask Rugger, who sits behind me.
I sigh, my mind becoming blank. "Didn't think so."
I'm getting hungrier and it's making me frustrated. I can hear the Walkers in the front of the building, snarling and stumbling around in their armor.
"Looks like rain." a voice makes me jump and spin around. But to my surprise, I see nothing but Rugger.
I'm going crazy. I think, looking up to see gray clouds.
"I did not just hear a voice." I tell myself firmly, turning back around to fiddle with the lock. I reach my hands out and begin pulling at the bolt when I feel a couple drops of cold water land on my arm. A shiver begins at the drop of water and runs through my whole body, making me look up at the sky.
It's raining.
I scratch my ear, still frightened by the voice, and continue looking at the sky. My eyes trail back down to the lock, but catch sight of an open window above the door.
