A bird wakes me up. It runs into the side of my fort and falls with a thump onto the ground.
It scares me, and I jump awake to see Rugger already perky and alert.
"What was that?" I ask Rugger, looking around.
I'm still dazed from my dream about why Adin wanted me and I realize why.
Adin didn't want me to tell them that the whole world was infected. No. They wanted me because they thought I knew the cure. But how would I know? Why didn't they go after the doctor if they wanted it that bad?
I shake my head. "What's done is done." I say, probably confusing Rugger.
My attention switches back to the mysterious thump and I stand up, brushing myself off, even though I'm not even dirty.
I hook my sword onto my pants and pick up my sword, walking down the ramp and unlocking the latch on the gate. Rugger trails closely at my heels as we walk around the edge of our fort and scan the ground and walls.
I spot a mark on the wall and on the ground is a half-dead bird twitching.
"He must've hit the side." I say, crouching down.
Rugger sniffs it curiously but I swat his hand away.
"It's still alive." Hearing my voice, I realize how un-enthusiastic its gotten. How gruff and jagged it sounds.
I take the tip of my knife blade and press it to the bird's small skull, and then push down.
I'm used to applying more force to kill something and I completely crush the skull of the bird.
"Oops." I say, wiping the burgundy-colored blood from my knife onto my pants.
I pick up the dead bird by it's feet and stand up.
"We should make a fire after we find water." I say to Rugger, sliding my knife back in it's sheath. "So where would we find water. Hasn't rained in a while. And there's no more water bottles at the market. Plus we promised that we wouldn't go back to town today." I say, thinking out loud as we walk around.
The strange yet familiar voices that I hear whispers, "Lake."
It doesn't scare me as much as it used to, but I still jump.
"Right. A pond or lake should do well." I say, looking at the ground in front of me.
Where there's more green leaves and moss, than water should be near. I learned that from a movie.
So, me and Rugger began following the greenery and flowers, thirsty and hungry. And more aware of the Walkers than the day before.
"I don't think we'll find any today." I say, kicking the dirt that seems to be getting dryer.
Rugger whines, following a pant and then licks his lips.
"Yeah." I agree, dropping the tip of my sword to the ground and letting it drag behind me. The noise of the gravel on the metal would bug me if I wasn't alone, but I am. So I like it. As well as Rugger's paw's hitting the ground as he keeps up with me. "What do'ya say? You think we should head back and go into town tomorrow?"
Rugger sneezes.
"Okay. Five more minutes. But after that, we're going back."
I squint as a cloud that was shielding the sun moves away and the sun beams shine onto my face. The heat feels good and refreshing at first, but after a moment of walking in it, I sweat heavier than before.
"Rugger!" I complain, starting to drag my feet.
He barks quietly and I become a bit more alert. Whenever he produces a sound like that, he see's something. It's usually a Walker.
I pull up my sword and duck behind a tree with my dog. The gurgling and snarling noises of a nearby Walker fills the air, and I can almost smell it. The sound of it's gnashing teeth and dragging feet are so familiar that it almost doesn't effect me anymore.
I look around through the branches and few leaves, and spot an old lady Walker stumbling towards us. Her bottom lip is gone, and her neck has an arrow in it.
"Ew." I mumble, pulling my sword up and stepping out from behind the tree.
I whistle and Rugger barks, louder than I had hoped for.
"Keep it quiet." I remind him, kicking the ground and walking towards the lady Walker.
She reaches her arms up, but I shift to the side and swing the sword at the back of her head.
The blood sprays at my face and Rugger who stands to the front of her, and I flinch my whole face holding my face as the sticky stuff coats my cheeks and neck. It almost gets in my mouth, but I manage to keep it out.
"We really need to find water." I say, wiping my mouth and chin with my forearm and putting my sword away. "But I'll let you lead."
Rugger shakes off the blood and it sprays me again and I scoff. "Thanks!"
Rugger sneezes again and then trots to the left of the direction we were heading. His nose skims the ground every few minutes and I can see the moss getting greener.
"Good boy!" I praise him, looking ahead of us.
I can spot a small patch of green grass, and I get the urge to start running. So I do. And Rugger follows behind me.
It takes us less than thirty seconds to get the the grass, and when we do, I look up.
A pond.
"YES!" I say loudly, running forward and dropping my weapons to the ground.
I'm too caught up in water, and pull my shirt over my head and put it beside the weapons.
"Come on!" I call Rugger, pulling my shoe's off and running to the water.
We splash and swim and refresh for a long time. Enough tie to make my toes and fingers wrinkle up into little raisins.
I try not to drink too much of the water, but just enough to keep me hydrated for a little bit longer until it rains again.
Playing in the water is fun. Until you get out and realize how cold you are; and I'm shivering, huddled beside Rugger.
"At-atleast we got w-water!" I shiver, pulling my dry shirt back on. "A-and know we can go back to c-c-camp and sl-sleep!" I say, trying to smile through chattering teeth.
I reach for my knife to hook back on my belt, but I'm interrupted, ever so rudely.
A cold barrel presses to my neck and a gruff, disruptive voice speaks from behind me.
"Bad idea." it says, clicking a bullet into a gun's barrel.
