NORMAN'S P.O.V.
I do have something planned. Something that will get me out of here.
"So," Theo trails to the chair in front of me and sits down, "tell me." he folds his hands. "What do you know that'll help us. And particularly, help you."
I glance up at him, about to start speeking when I remember. "Just show me that Grace is out. With Rugger."
Theo exhales with force and looks to the wall beside him. "You know, you don't have to make it this hard. Just tell me what you know, and you'll be with your Juliet soon enough."
I shake my head instantly after he starts speeking, "This is ridiculous."
I'm waiting. Waiting for the right moment to fulfil my plan. While I'm waiting, I'm also trying not to keel over in pain. My side is stinging, but I power through it.
"Why don't you just test science and stuff on the people that are bit? Infected already." I say, trying to keep my voice as steady as possible.
"Norman, listen. Don't you think we've tried that? All the bit people we send on their way out'a here. They ain't got nothing for us. All they'll do is turn and ruin this place." Theo explains.
That's it. That's my cue.
I stand, point my side at him. He sees the blood. The bite mark on me.
But he doesn't know it's not reel. I mean, it's a real cut, but I made it. Made it to look like a bite.
Theo's shocked, and he stands up as well.
"What's that?!" he points at it.
I start breathing heavily and try to seem weaker than before. I'm sort of surprised he didn't notice the big red spot on my shirt, dripping down.
"A bite." I say, in between breaths. "What'ya think?"
Theo's queit, and then ties my hands up slowly. "I'm going to, um, get Mandy."
And with that, he's out of the room.
I stop breathing hard, and sit back down. It doesn't hurt terribly bad. Not as bad as I made it look. I just hope it was convincing enough. Enough to get me out of here.
Theo walks back in, less frightened.
Thoughts pour into my mind. What if I wasn't convincing? What if he keeps me here to see if I turn?
He crosses his arms and speaks proudly, "When did you manage to get a bite? I was with you for the past few days."
My heart leaps, and I lay my forehead on the table out of 'pain'. "Mack. He took me to do a peremeter check without y'all's permision. Ain't nobody seen the Walker that got in."
Theo seems to consider my story for a moment, and then nods. "When?"
I"m begging he'll beleive me.
"It don't matter 'when'. Mack's dead, I'm bit, and I suggest if you don't want me turning and tearing you apart in this little room, that you let me out of this place."
Theo had taken a step back when I was yelling at him. He then looks down at the red spot on my shirt and then back at me. I've managed to get myself to start sweating so it looks like I'm sick.
"Stand up." Theo says.
I stand. Weakly.
"Is that what this is about? Is this all a plan to get out of here and see Grace? Cause I hate to tell you, but there's a big chance you won't see her again. You think we'd just let her out of here like that?"
I feel anger. And my heart-rate increases, excited to do what I'm about to do. Within seconds, I've slipped the ropes of my hands, and pinned him against the wall.
~*~*~*
I walk away from that room like nothing happened. My fists are bloody, and I sort of left Theo dead, but I only have one thing on my mind. Getting Grace out of the room.
Theo told me he put her back into the solitary room. And Rugger was outside in a small cage.
Adrenaline rushed through me as I slid the door open to see Grace in the back corner, facing the wall.
She didn't move when I touched her shoulder, but glanced over at me quickly when I unlocked her locks with the keys I got off of Theo.
"Come on," I say, standing beside her.
She just stares down at her fingers that pull at a string on her shoe.
Her wrists make me cringe. I have no idea how to tell her that we need to get out of here. I mean, she knows, but I need her to know that we need to go NOW.
"Grace," I sit down on my knees beside her. "Grace, we're going to be fine. You're safe now, it's just me."
As I'm reaching out to help her up, she sort of pushes my arm away and stands up on her own. She turns around, and starts walking out.
"Come on." she says, looking back at me. "Don't we have to go?"
I pause, then nod and stand up. We exit the building, me falling behind her a bit, and then look for Rugger. He's not hard to find, and we spot him around the corner in a small crate. I pry the door open, and then look around to see if anyone is around.
No one.
So we make a run for the front gate. And we're out.
But we don't stop running. It goes without say that we need to get as far away from this place as possible. So we run. We run until night and then stop at a small pond. And we set up camp for the night.
It only takes twenty minutes to make the small lean-to that we did. And Grace is the one to lay down inside of it.
We're all hungry, so I make a simple snare to catch food for tomorrow.
Once we have a fire, I lay down on my back inside the small hut we made. Grace faces away from me, and I stare up at the twigs that float above us.
Nothing happens for a good long while, and then Grace turns to face me.
"Sean." she says quietly.
I nod, and look back up. "Sean." I echo.
I'm not one to cry, but that name makes my throat burn.
"Sean," Grace says again.
I can't say it back this time. I just shut my eye's tightly and shake my head.
I feel Grace's hand slide over my chest. She just rests her hand there, and then feels the blood mark.
"Is it really a bite?" he voice is so low that I almost don't hear her.
"No." I say. I don't know what else to do.
She nods and then pulls her hand back to her and turns away. And we don't make any more contact for the rest of the night. Which is almost torture for me. She's so close, yet so far away.
