Hinata drew in a short breath in fear as the ball hurled towards his teammate. It was the second set, their opponent having won the first set and was easily winning the second. the red-heads teammates had lost hope long ago. Hinata's friend Hōrō-sha sloppily attempted to receive it and the ball went flying towards the net. The short boy watched in slow motion as the ball began it's decent to the ground. I can't, Hinata sprinted towards the net and dived across the floor, let it the boy's hand squeezed between the ball and the ground, Fall. The volleyball returned to the air as one of his teammates chased after it, only to let it fall to the ground. I gave them a second chance, I did what I could, Hinata told himself, looking down at the ground and gritting his teeth. The score was now 19-3, the other team ahead.
"We... can still...," Hinata whispered, closing his eyes and clenching his fists, "Win." He trained his eyes of the boy serving the ball, preparing himself. The boy tossed the ball up, as it came down, the boy smashed it with his hand and it b-lined straight at Hinata's face. Anyone with basic common sense would have dodged a serve like that. Hinata just furrowed his brow and adjusted his feet backwards so the ball came towards his forearms rather than his face. He braced for impact as the ball collided with his arms.
"Nakama! Get it!" Hinata yelled to his friend at the ball flew through the air. They boy attempted to set the ball, sending it flying in the opposite direction of the red-head. Hinata sprinted as fast as he could and as he got closer to where the ball was, he shoved himself off the ground, flying diagonally to the ball, and slamming it down with all his might. There was silence as the ball landed on the other side of the net. The other team, the referee, everyone watching, and even his own teammates stood there, dumbfounded. Not a single person in the gym understood how the small red-head had traveled across the gym in time to spike the poor, misdirected set from his friend. Hinata merely walked back into position and prepared for the next play. The red head wiped beads of sweat from his forehead and trained his eyes forward, waiting for his friend to serve the ball.
As the ball was put back into play the opponents libero received the ball, sending it to the tall, raven haired setter. Said boy fired the ball in a b-line above the spiker, who was to late and missed the set. The raven haired boy growled, glaring at their ace,
"You need to be faster, work harder!" He snarled. The ace grimaced and turned away, giving their coach a nervous look. The coach nodded understandingly, turning to say something to a teaming standing on the sidelines. Kageyama's team won the next point, as they were rotating, he heard the blaring sound of the referee's whistle, indicating a sub. His heart dropped when he saw the number 2 on the sub card. Why? Why is coach taking me out? I'm working so hard and winning points, coach should take out Takashi, he's not keeping up. Kageyama walked off the court, taking the sub card from his teammate. As he walked to the bench, his coach gave him a weak, forced smile. The older man motioned for the raven haired boy to take a seat beside him.
"Do you know why you were subbed out?" Kageyama's coach inquired.
"No! You should've take out Takashi! He's not keeping up, we need someone who is going to work hard!" Kageyama groaned, burying his face in his hands, tears forming in his eyes. His coach sighed.
"Takashi is working as hard as he can, you're given your sets to hard. That's why I took you out." Coach explained. This only further upset the 8th year boy (A/N idk what they call it in Japan, basically the equivalent of 8th grade in America). He groaned again, going into emotional overdrive, tears falling faster as he fell apart. There's only one more point till we win, I can just leave. Kageyama told himself.
"Excuse me, may I leave early?" Kageyama whispered, practically begging his coach.
"Okay, practice on Tuesday at 6:30," his coach said,
"And Kageyama?" His coach began, looking at the boy in question.
"Yes sir?"
"Don't push yourself so hard." With that Kageyama turned and ran out of the gym, towards the bathroom, tears streaming down his face.
As the other team scored one more point, it was over. Hinata bit his lip, holding back tears as he stole a glance at the score board that read: 25-06. Hinata congratulated the other team, noticing the absence of the tall raven haired boy. The red haired boy hugged each of his friends, thanking them for doing this for him, waving to each of them as they walked out of the gym, leaving him standing on his own. As his last friend was out of sight, he snapped. Tears poured down the small boys face, he bolted for the bathroom, humiliated by his appearance. As he entered the bathroom he was met with an unexpected sight. Illuminated by the fluorescent lights was the raven haired boy from the match. His eyes red and puffy as he sniffled, tears relentlessly falling down his cheeks; as his knees were pulled up to his chest as he cried on the floor on the other side of the bathroom. When he caught sight of Hinata he buried his face in his hands. The red haired boy slowly crept towards the crying boy, his worries long forgotten. As Hinata approached the crying boy, he knelt down, kneeling on his feet.
"Hey, hey, hey" Hinata said softly, gently grasping Kageyama's hands and guiding them away from his face. As Kageyama looked up, Hinata gave him a soft, comforting smile.
"It's okay, you're alright, I'm here," Hinata cooed, acting as if the two boys knew each other.
"Now, do you want to tell me what's wrong?" Hinata asked gently. For some reason Kageyama felt as though he could be open with this boy that he din't even know.
"I'm a terrible teammate! Everything is my fault! I'm the one that screws everything up, I just want to make us successful. I want to see everyone smile at me when we score, so I try to make everything perfect. But, they don't even look at me, I'm not part of the team, I'm just there. I stand there and watch, each time they celebrated together I stood alone. I can't do this anymore, I don't want to be alone any more!" Kageyama's tears fell harder as he sobbed into Hinata's shirt. The redhead felt how he felt he knew what it was like too feel alone. With his dad gone and his mom always working to desperately try to make ends meet. But now wasn't time to pity himself, this boy needed someone to be there and support him. Hinata traced circles on the raven haired boy's back.
"Hey now, it's alright. You're important okay? Please never forget that, without a strong setter, wining is impossible. Even if your teammates don't fully understand that, always remember it." Hinata said, comforting him.
"Well, I should head home, I have to walk and I live pretty far from here, and I have to make dinner. So, good luck, remember how important you are." The read haired boy said, standing up.
"Bye!" He waved smiling kindly at Kageyama. As Hinata ran home the thought about his encounter in the bathroom, and how he felt like he knew exactly what to do, like he had comforted that boy a million times before. As he ran deep in thought, he ran into a boy about his age, knocking a grocery bag out of his hand.
"Oh my god I am soooooo sorry!" Hinata squeaked, scrambling to help the boy pick up his belongings.
"No no no, you're i wasn't looking where I was going," they other boy explained. Once everything was picked up, Hinata apologized once more and took off running again. Once Hinata arrived home he began cooking. As the short boy had nearly completed the meal, he noticed the absence of the timer on his wrist. He screeched in frustration and yelled,
"IDIOT! HOW COULD I HAVE NOT NOTICED!! I'VE BEEN OUT ALL DAY!! IT COULD HAVE BEEN ANYONE." The red haired boy took the finished food off the stove an raced up the stairs to the bathroom.
That evening (Around the same time Hinata was finishing up cooking) Kageyama was sitting in bed when he realized the timer on his wrist had finally disappeared, he bolted out of his bedroom and into the bathroom.
Hinata stood breathless in front of the mirror, his mind running wild.He hastily pulled his shirt over his head to find....
Kageyama stood before his mirror, was this finally happening?! The raven haired boy figured that if the flower soulmate mark wasn't on his arms, it was somewhere on his chest or back. Kageyama grippe his shirt, pulling his shirt off revealing....
