*I realize that I may be annoying some people by writing 'Cass' instead of 'Cas' but I choose to write it the way I do because Misha once tweeted that the script spells it 'Cass' so that's how I'm going to do it out of respect for the writers of Supernatural and their random and unnecessary decision to add an extra 's' in Castiel's nickname

Dean had refused to let Sam come on this job. It simply wasn't going to happen. Once again, Sam had put himself in a life-threatening situation and was, as always, almost killed in the process. Anyone can see Sam needs his rest except Sam. Cass and backed Dean in his argument for Sam to sit this one out, and Dean was grateful, though didn't show it. Sam had groaned but eventually have in, agreeing to act as the man they'd call if they needed anything looked up in the library or something else of the sort.
Now, Dean and Cass are out on the roads in Dean's beloved 1967 Chevy Impala. It's dark outside, and the drive is three days in either direction, despite Dean's fast and sometimes reckless driving. Cass calmly rides in the glorified position of shotgun. On many occasions, he has attempted to claim this seat, but Dean or Sam or both would shoot him down. It's rare occasions like these when Dean and Cass are the only two in the car when Castiel gets to ride shotgun.
These past couple days have raised Cass's suspicions about Dean. He's been unusually 'out-of-it.' Now, in the car, Cass's suspicions are definitely proven correct. Very unlike Dean's normal reckless driving, this time, his swerving and drifting is caused by what Castiel understands to be called drowsiness, something angels don't experience.
Cass assumes that Dean would pull into a motel sooner or later, but he just keep driving. Perhaps they are nearing their destination and Dean wishes to just get there already. This is a three day trip.
After Dean passes the fifth motel, Cass decides it's time for him to intervene. "Dean." He comments in his usual deep voice.
"Yeah, Cass?" Dean wearily looks over to his friend, and runs over the rumble strips in the process. He it jerked into a more attentive state of being and he quickly pulls back into the road.
Cass narrows his eyes, "Are you alright?"
Dean quickly replies in the easily detectable facade that he is okay, "I'm fine, Cass."
"Dean-"
"I'm fine." The plaid-wearing hunter quickly cuts him off. Cass let's it go until they almost hit another car as it speeds by and honks it's horn when Dean starts to drift into their lane. Cass knows that this never happens. Dean is the one to speed past other cars at Father-knows-how-fast. Deans driving abnormally slow and even more haphazardly than normal and Cass was sick of Dean's pretending.
"You are obviously not okay, Dean. When was the last time you slept? For at least four hours like you always insist on having, too." Cass can tell that although he tries to keep his composure, his annoying is seeping out in his tone, much more so than his worry.
"Last night."
Lie.
"Dean." Cass replies warningly
Dean tiredly glances between Cass and the road a few times before defensively admitting, "Tuesday, alright? Last I slept was Tuesday."
"Dean..." Cass sighs, confused as to what's keeping Dean up and concerned about it, too. He drops it, sensing his friend is quite defensive and slightly annoyed at him for dragging the answer out of him. Cass sits quietly in shotgun for a few moments before deciding, "You should pull over and let me drive."
"No, Cass!"
"Dean-"
"I said no! I'm fine! I can drive. I've gone longer on less sleep before." Dean attempts to reassure his angel friend while very simply not being able to do so.
Cass, once again, let's his human friend have his way. Cass knows Dean hates being told what to do. Respecting that, Cass will often keep his mouth shut and do what Dean says, but not this time. Not after Dean runs over the rumble strip again. Castiel isn't sure how Dean will react to his putting his foot down, but it must be done. "Dean, pull over." When Dean invites him, Cass raises his voice ever so slightly, "Now, Dean."
Once again, Dean glances between Cass and the road ahead of him. After the twosome having a staring contest of sorts, Dean groans and mumbles in disagreement, but pulls off the road. Cass is outside the driver's seat in a split second. Literally, because he can teleport.
Dean slowly looks up at Cass through the window before slowly and sloppily opening the door and getting out to walk around the front of the car to go sit in shotgun for what aught to be the first time Cas has ever seen him do so.
Cass quickly jumped in the driver's seat and pulled away so that Dean couldn't change back. Cass found that he wasn't as bad behind Dean's wheels as he thought he might be. He remembers that he's had a car before and although this one is much older and has an undescribable amount of sentimental value, he finds that he is easily taking the wheel.
Dean is defensive over his car, though. For a solid fifteen minutes, he does nothing but critique Cass's driving. It was fifteen minutes of nonstop what out for the- did you check the- and if you crash my car I swear!
After fifteen minutes of perfect driving on Cass's part, Dean falls asleep faster than someone could turn off the lights. One moment, he's telling Cas that they'd probably end up broken down on the side of the road and Dean would have to fix it, and the next, he was mumbling incomprehensible words under his breath, and finally, Cass heard his breathing slow to that which indicates one's sleep.
Cass, although he will never admit it, feels a sense of pride in the fact that Dean could so soon feel comfortable enough to leave Cass to drive Dean's car while he gets some, given, long overdue and very needed rest.
So Cass chooses not to overuse this special moment and pulls into the next motel he passes. Cautiously leaving Dean in the car to sleep, he tries to get a room as quickly as possible so as not to leave the defenseless sleeping Dean in the car.
He quickly drives them over and parks the car in the parking spot right in front of their room, and teleports Dean into the room. He was glad to find that the trip hadn't caused Dean to wake up, and he was sleeping soundly on the queen-sized bed as Castiel watched over him as he always has and always will.
