"Mei!" Kazuo came out from the store. "I told you to wait at the playground. What are you doing here?"
'I-I came to find you. Some of the boys were picking on me." she cried out.
"Boys picking a little girl like her? We should resolve this." I thought.
"Where are they now?" I asked, hoping to be able to fix the problem.
"They're over there." she pointed to the playground swings.
There I saw some 4th graders fooling around with the swing sets. I headed straight towards the boys. Then I met their glaring eyes and asked "Hey, you guys. What are you doing?"'
"What does it look like? We're playing on the swings here." one of them answered, and they went on playing with swings.
"I heard from this little girl, here, that you guys were picking on her." I replied back.
"So what? You're going to hurt us or something?" another boy said.
"N-" I was cut off by Kazuo.
"Of course not. We just wanted to say that you shouldn't be picking on people. It's not very nice." Kazuo said.
"Pftt. Whatever." they all went back to playing.
Then I saw one of their mothers come to pick them up.
"Maru! Come on, let's go home!" one of their mothers called out.
Then as the boy left with his mom, I realized the other boys were showing signs of envy. Like, their mothers weren't planning to pick them up until later. Then a thought came up.
"Hey. Do you guys want to do something?"
"Why are you even asking that, old lady?"
How rude! But I kept a calm face.
"Oh come on. Don't you want to do something fun?"
"Why would we play with you? We barely even know you."
"Do I need to prove myself?"
"Of course."
Then I started playing pretend with Mei. She's the princess, while I pretend to be an evil wizard. Mei started using her magical powers to defeat me, while Kazuo pretended to be the prince and also trying to defeat me. Then I started seeing the boys slowly coming towards me and playing along.
"Get her!" the boys shouted.
After a couple of hours later, their mothers finally came.
"Oh, are you the one who was playing with my son?" one mother asked.
"Um, I was only trying to cheer him up. They all looked to sad and bored."
"My. My boy hasn't been so cheerful since I had to work extra hours. Thank you."
"Oh, it's my pleasure."
I said goodbye to everyone then Kazuo came to say something to me.
"Chiyo-san."
Wait, that's the first time I've heard him call my name! My face is turning hot!
"Uh, yes"
"You did great. I mean, you handled those boys well!"
"Thank you." I took a glance at my watch. It's 12:14! "Oh my goodness. It's time for lunch. I better get going."
"Wait, onii-chan. Can you eat with us?"
"I really can't right now, sorry." I started leaving.
But she then rushed over and hugged my arm and pleaded "Please!" with a face about to cry.
I couldn't just leave while making one sad just after making some happy, so I said "Okay, fine. Let's go eat." I ruffled her hair.
"Yay! Did you hear that, Aki!" she instantly cheered up.
We ended up eating at a ramen place, and it was fun.
Then Mei started "Aki." she tapped at his shoulder.
"What is it?" he asked.
Then Mei started whispering something to Kazuo that I couldn't hear.
Then Kazuo started whisper-shouting "Hey!" and started ruffling her hair.
I've got to admit, that was kind of funny, and I started laughing a little.
That afternoon was fun, but then I started looking at the time. 4:35!
"It's gotten really late. I have to get going. And thank you for lunch. See you tomorrow."
"Thanks a lot for today!" Mei replied.
"See you tomorrow." Kazuo said.
"Bye."
I went into the market and grabbed the groceries and ran home.
When I returned home, I quickly explained why I was out so late.
"I'm so sorry, Granny!" I bowed.
"Oh, it's okay, Atsuko."
"But, you wanted the curry."
"It's fine, Atsuko. I completely understand your situation. Now go get ready for dinner."
I started putting away the ingredients and went and got ready for school and to bed. When I went to sleep that night, I actually felt a bit... excited, about the whole day. I went on to read the book: The Tales of Wisteria
Then I fell asleep.
