“Today’s lesson is simple…” Master Alatar’s voice pierced into my eardrums and went out from the other side. That day’s cooking class was super boring, plus i didn’t get to sleep well the night before. I was too busy trying to keep my eyes open. Who cares about cooking anyway?

“Bake a cupcake that is edible yet special. The number of cupcakes you want to bake is up to you. To minimise movement around this kitchen, do this with your roommate… Who is right beside you. This is a graded assignment so i expect all of you to do it well.”

I was instantaneously awakened from my world of fatigue. Did he just say “roommate”?!  Many Mysticians groaned in disapproval. I guess I wasn’t the only one who didn’t want to work with my roommate... Jackson turned and said, “So I guess we are gonna be cupcakers! Get it? Cupcake bakers.”

That was the lamest joke I had ever heard in my life.

I rolled my eyes and glared at him. Seriously, how could a cute guy like him be so lame? Jackson winked at me playfully. What a nuisance. I bet he didn't even know how to bake! Grabbing a pen and a paper, I cooled myself down before speaking. After all, we should make the best out of a bad situation right?

“What type of cupcake do you think we should make?”

“Lets just mix every potion that is edible here into our cupcake mixture and see what we get.”

“I don't think that would be a good idea-”

Before I could finish my sentence, Jackson poured all kinds of potions into the cupcake mixture as I stared at him in disbelief. He did not just do that!!! As i turned to yell at him, the cupcake mixture started sizzling. I stared at it in fright. What was happening? Was it going to explode?

“Are you crazy?! We don’t even know what would happen if you do that!” I hissed at him angrily.  Did he even know what he was doing?!

Surprisingly, the mixture stopped sizzling after a while. I dipped my finger into the mixture and tasted it. After all, it's edible right? To be honest, it tasted pretty good, and the colour of the mixture was purple. A decent taste, and a decent colour. Perfect! Maybe Jackson wasn't that bad after all. A smile unknowingly manifested itself on my expression. Jackson seemed to notice it and threw a small speck of flour on my cheeks. Annoyed, I grabbed a handful of flour on each hand and cupped his cheeks tightly. That was when it happened. Our gaze met.

It felt so magical. So wonderful.

His eyes stared deep into my soul as my hands gripped tightly on his soft, smooth cheeks. I couldn't help but blush. I stared at him back with desire and lust evident in my eyes. For that moment, everything around me seemed to fade away. I felt the strong desire of pulling him in for a kiss. My heartbeats accelerated as my whole body froze. It was as though I had allowed Jackson's gaze to rule my body. We stared into each other’s eyes for what it seemed like an eternity before...

“What are you two doing?! Carry on with your work! Stop messing around!”

Master Alatar's baritone voice reverberated through the air. Shocked, Jackson and I broke eye contact. I quickly pulled my hands away from Jackson’s checks and looked somewhere else in embarrassment. Flustered, I quickly took out the cupcake mould and slowly poured the mixture into it. Afterwards, I silently placed the cupcake mould into the oven and set it to bake for twenty minutes.

Those twenty minutes were the most awkward moments of my life.

I could tell Jackson was embarrassed too. He avoided eye contact and spoke lesser. I kinda liked that moment just now though. That moment of lust when I realised I had fallen in love. Wait...FALLEN IN LOVE?! Ewwww!! No!! This couldn't be!! I shuddered at the thought of it. I would never fall for a jerk like Jackson!

Suddenly, the whole oven shook violently and the cupcakes inside started multiplying. I turned to Jackson and exclaimed, “What did you add into the mixture?!” Jackson rummaged through the potions and pulled out a potion labelled “Multiplier”. “I must have put this in by accident!” Jackson replied. Well, maybe Jackson was that bad after all. Thanks to him, everything was ruined! I looked at the clock- there was only ten minutes left! There was no way we could rebake the cupcakes!

BOOM!

The oven exploded, and the whole room rained with shimmering cupcakes. Jackson caught a cupcake and offered it to me. I quickly shook my head. He shrugged and took a bite out of it. Instantly, his eyes lit up with joy. “Mmmmmmm! This is delicious!” Some Mysticians grabbed a cupcake and took a bite, followed by another, and another. As for me, I just stood there wide-eyed in shock. “This calls for a cupcake party!!” Harper shouted gleefully. Everyone began devouring the cupcakes. Master Alatar tried to get the class back in control, however no one bothered to listen to him. Harper handed him a cupcake and he ended up eating many cupcakes too!

“These cupcakes are delicious! Jackson and Jewel, both of you get an A for this task!”

“Woohooo!” exuberance bubbled in me as Jackson and I high-fived. After that, it became slightly awkward again. I rubbed my hand on my other arm as I heaved a deep sigh of nervousness. After what seemed like an eternity, Jackson said, “We're great cupcakers after all, right?” I giggled and nodded my head. All of us spent the rest of the ten minutes munching on the cupcakes. That unexpected cupcake party deepened my bond with Jackson. I felt strong feelings that I never felt before…Was it hatred or love?
