She uses "were" instead of "are" or "is" as if she is telling a story. The story of how "he got caught up in the game chasing paper" and how "he went out on sunday" but she also sings as if talking to him. "I will love you till the end of time" shows how she is waiting "a million years." She will wait for him forever.
