He was sitting at the head of the table
drinking black coffee
reading the newspaper
not really
he was watching her intently

Sitting in his shirt
on the opposite side of the table
gulping her orange juice
nibbling on her piece of toast

She did look like a nightingale
to him in that moment

Folding the paper
he drank the coffee empty
and waited till she realised
he wanted her attention

When finally the little bird
looked up
she almost
almost
shuddered at his expression

"What is it, my darling?"
she cooed
biting her lip
flipping her butter yellow hair
over her shoulder

A predatory grin escaped his mouth
"Nothing, little nightingale. I was just admiring how beautiful you were looking today."

Her cheap smile
told him everything
