So that's what happened. We stayed together for a long time. We eventually hit 18. We graduated. We went off to college. But we stayed together, as we went to the same college just outside our town.
By the time I turned 22, we both had graduated. And we were still together.
And my 22nd birthday was a night to remember.
"Are your eyes still closed?" Erin asked me, still holding my hand and guiding me to who knows where.
"Yes, Erin, my eyes are still closed." I said.
She held my hand and guided me a few more feet before letting go.
"Okay, open your eyes." I heard her say.
I opened my eyes. We were at the pier. The sun was just setting, but the August sky made it look so beautiful. I felt Erin's hand brush against mine. I looked down. Erin was on one knee. She was holding a black box, and I saw her open it. A diamond ring shimmered in the light. I felt the tears well up in my eyes.
"Kailynn, you've made me the happiest woman in the world since the day I've met you. And these 6 years have been the best years of my life. So, will you do me the honor to let me call you my wife, and marry me?"
I just looked at her and admired her for a second. And it was in that moment that I realised how much I loved her.
I felt like I couldn't speak.
I nodded my head.
Erin slid the engagement ring on my finger and stood up. We kissed for a long time.
