*Thanks for reading!*
Clara takes a deep breath and skips over to the girl with long, brown hair sitting alone on the bench.
"Hi, I'm Clara!" She states happily. The girl pushes her stick straight locks away from her face and looks up unsmiling.
"Hi." She replies emotionless.
Clara is sad that the new girl doesn't seem to want to talk, but being the spirited, well spoken, energetic 6-year-old that she is, she persists.
"Do you wanna play house?" Clara says, sitting next to the girl. The girl flinches away a little bit but then turns and gives a tiny smile.
"Okay."
Clara's smile grows and she drags the younger girl onto the playground equipment. The pair set up a table filled with all the fine plastic food their hearts desired. They sit down across from each other and begin "eating." They giggle and have adult conversation about taxes and bills and whatever other grown-up words they could think of. They finish and clean up the table just in time to be called in from recess by the teacher.
"I had fun!" Clara says. The girl simply nods and puts her head down. Clara thinks she may not have had fun and would not want to play with her again. Clara turns to walk back to her classroom before she feels the younger girl's arms wrap around her.
"I did too. Thanks for playing with me. I'm Melody."
Clara turns back and sees Melody, for the first time since they'd met, with a wide smile on her face. Clara smiles back instantly and hugs her.
"Let's be best friends, okay? Then we can play together every day!" Clara jumps a little with excitement and Melody follows suit.
"Okay! Best friends forever!" They hug once more and retreat back to their classrooms.
