Rune

I stayed outside for a while longer. My mind was no longer on the bright moon and twinkling stars. No, it was on everything that has happened. I've tried and tried not to let my mind wander down dark paths that will eventually lead me to the horrendous and evil thoughts penetrating my mind, but it's hard when there's still something eating away at my conscious.

Besides the fact that my dad died because of me, and my forgetful attention span, there's one thing no one has brought up. I NEVER saw that blood sucker coming, and usually their scent is a putrid acid smell that just burns your nostrils like you just inhaled a bottle of Sriracha sauce. However, I didn't smell anything other than nature and what the wind decided to blow my way that day.

Question is: why DIDN'T I smell him? It's not like my nose stopped working long enough for it to make it past me. Witchcraft, maybe? There's no other reasonable explanation for how it could have made it past me. Maybe it was my lack of attention?

But that just brings one more question to my mind. If the blood sucker killed my dad, then why wasn't it stopped? It is still out there somewhere probably gallivanting in pride and telling everyone how he or she brought down a big, bad Alpha.

It is still out there, sucking on some humans blood and killing any 'obstacles' in their way. Whoever killed him needs to have the same such fate. They need to be six feet under ground, screaming out from their coffin for eternity how sorry they are. As far as I know, no one has bothered to scout beyond the perimeter for that blood sucker. Maybe If we search for clues as to why the blood sucker was in our territory, we could figure out WHY he killed my father. My dad was always a good father and as far as I know, never associated himself with vampires. So why was he the the only target and victim?

...

I had lost track of time and realized that I was outside far longer than I expected. My thoughts were put aside as a voice filled my mind link.

Will you meet me in the office?

Lee.

I didn't need to be asked twice by the person. I knew that If I didn't come now, he would come out here and grab me himself.

I stood up stretching my sore muscles before making my way to the office.

Once I stepped inside, I could hardly contain a groan at the sight of Lee sending me the worst death glare I've ever received. His green eyes narrowed at me dangerously, waiting for me to say one wrong thing. I take a seat in the chair in front of his desk, not talking. He called me here, so he should be the one to talk first. I wait.

I dare move my eyes away from his, glancing around my father's office. Light casting through the window is creating a glare off of his mahogany desk, illuminating all of his old, dusty novels. Thick spines of decade old books line two tall bookshelves on either side of the walls. Lighter colored frames line the walls behind the desk, old memories living in them. There's one of the first time I brought down my first buck, and another of my dad holding a four foot bass that we caught one day out on the lake. There's also an older one, taken before I was even born, of my parents. My dad has a secure grip on my mother's waste and the brightest smile lighting his features. My mom stands equally as happy, her straight teeth showing through her wide, smiling lips. They were in Pasadena, California a pack trip. My father had told me that they were doing a little hunting outside the cabin and found this little area. It was lit with the shining sun, and heating a beautiful river behind them. One thing that stood out heavily was how pregnant she looked. Her stomach stood, stretched out and there was no missing the motherly glow casting her face.

I gulp the lump down my throat, casting my eyes back on the man in front of me. Lee abandoned his glare, and was now settling his emotionless eyes on me. Ever since I was little, he would give me those emotionless eyes that never hinted at whether he was about to attack me or squeeze me till I was blue from hugs. His poker face seems to have further advanced over the years and I don't like it.

Enough. I narrow my eyes dangerously at him and fold my arms above my chest. Two can play at this game, bucko.

So for the next few minutes, we stare heavily at each other. Waiting for the weaker one to relent. His eyes hold me in place, not even blinking. A few minutes in, I could feel it. The air around me shifted and my eyes watered. He blurred behind my drying pupils and I couldn't take it. My eyes watered and I had to blink. He smirked as a tear fell down my dry eyes. Wiping my eyes, I glared at him.

"Haha, so funny." I mutter angrily.

He was this close to being tackled over the desk.

He cracks a small smile, "I knew you would lose, dry eyes."

A huff escapes me and I roll my eyes, "If you were feeling less of a man, go get it on with a mateless girl in the pack, not degrade my eyes to make you feel superior."

At this, he throws his head back and laughs heartily, the sounds reverberating around the office.

"You know, I've missed this. I missed hanging with you in a while." At those words, my mouth tugs at the corner. Looks like my absence really has affected everyone.

"I know, it's been a week or two. It's just since that day... I needed some time to figure some stuff out." My fingers fidget in my lap, tapping the tune of the supernatural theme song.

Lee nods in understanding. Of course he understands. He was my dad's loyal beta and a really close family friend. "We all did. I was just really worried about you, you know?"

"I missed you too Lee-Lee." He grins at the mention of his nickname although he has threatened to gouge my eyes out with a spoon if I call him that in public. Lesson. Learned.

"Anything new happen while I was away?" I lean back in the chair.

"Not much, three new females went into heat and Dorothy had another vision that Bone, the invisible dog that lives under her house, crawled into her garden and tore up her exotic Marigolds."

I chuckle despite the pitifulness of the situation. Dorothy is the oldest wolf in our pack and was supposedly the wisest, but I wouldn't trust her wisdom even if my life depended on it. To put it bluntly, I don't know how that old hag has survived this long. She sometimes sees invisible people and animals under her house. "Oh no, not her Marigolds."

He gives me a look and twirled his finger at his temple, signalling she was CRAZY. I laugh again, not being able to contain it. It's been awhile since I had a good laugh and I deserved this.

"Nothing interesting enough for gossip I see." I fein a sigh

"Actually, there is one thing going around the pack. Everyone is curious about your Ceremony?" He says

I pause. What? "What Ceremony?" I ask

Lee just chuckles lightly, "Don't play dumb with me. You should be looking forward to it."

Looking forward to what exactly? "Lee, what do you mean?"

He sets a pair of emotionless eyes on me once again and I feel my frustration coming back almost instantly. "You really forgot, didn't you?"

My hands fly in the air, "Forgot what!?"

"According to pack law, if something happens to an Alpha like he is sick the beta takes over-"

"-what?" I interject, rolling my eyes. He's dead, not sick.

"But If he dies unfortunately as that is, his heir is supposed to step up and take the Alpha position."

Ohhhhhh Do you think she will like being the Alpha? What do you think will happen next? If you enjoyed this chapter PLEASE leave vote and a comment.
