After the two long days of running, my wolf sighs in relief as we approach the boundaries of the pack. My wolf smells the different scents of the pack and decides to enter. My wolf comes to a slow trot and follows the scent of where the main area of the pack is and suddenly the fur on the back of my neck stands up straight, sensing a being around. I turn around just in time to see a female stepping out from the shade under a pine tree. She tries to step closer and I let out a deep growl from deep inside of my gut. My body twists and I lower on my haunches. She chuckles slightly and her head turns a little bit to the side, regarding my with a reserved expression. My wolf didn't like how this female was acting. Shouldn't she be afraid of a random wolf on the pack? I can't help the growl that manages its way past my muzzle.
The girl finally speaks up, "You must be Byron, right?"
My ears flatten down against my head. There was obviously a lack of communication from whoever told her I was coming.
My silence seems to concern her a bit as her eyebrows furrow and she opens her mouth to say something. Before she does, I turn around and trot behind the nearest tree.
"Hey!" She begins "I'm talking to you. Are you not who I'm looking for?"
From behind the tree, I force my wolf to change back into my human form. I drop the pack I carried and changed into a pair of shorts. I reached around into the bag in search for my white tank top, and my hands brush against the cold metal of the dagger.
I don't think I will need this right now.
I finally find the white top and throw it over my head and fix it in place, and only then do I step out from behind the tree.
She must have been focusing on something else because her eyes snap up to me. Her mouth opens a little bit and she scrambled to speak. "You- are you Byron?"
I chuckle lowly, "First of all, my name is Syron with an S. No 'b' but yes, that's me."
She looks take aback for a second before bringing her hand up to rub tiredly against her forehead. I noticed the dark circles under her eyes and mine briefly glance at the cut I see on her wrist before they snap back up at the sound of her voice. "My apologies Syron with an "s", my name is Rune. I'm so thankful that you are here."
With a polite smile I extend my hand out for her to shake, "Nice to meet you, and I'm glad I can help. I just hope I can help you find who you are looking for."
Her small hand is gently raised to meet mine and I can't help how my breath falters for a second. My wolf whines in my head and for a second an idea crosses my mind: could this be my mate?
At this my wolf makes a grunt in the back of his head signaling my answer. She is not our mater, but she is a fine female. Her curly blonde hair falls past her shoulders and her dark blue eyes are almond shaped and covered in long, light blonde lashes. Her lips though, a soft pink. Like the kind of pink you would expect ones to be after a few kisses.
Never the less, I shake her hand momentarily and she replies, "Whatever you can do will be a great help. Since his...uh,since the accident about two weeks ago I haven't been able to track anything and I thought I could use an outsiders help, ya know?"
I nod my head in complete understanding. "I am here to help."
She smiles for a second, but it never reaches her eyes. "Thank you so much."
We are left in a moment of awkward silence. Do I say something? What happens next?
I cough, "I've uh, been basically running here for two days straight, is there a place where I can rest and possibly shower?"
She seems to jump a little bit out of her skin, "Gosh I apologize, yes, you must be very tired. Right this way."
She scurries back towards the direction I found her in and begins walking. "Follow me, Syron." I cant help but jolt at the way she says my name. It's just my name, why am I acting like this? My wolf sputters for a second. He seems to like this female a lot. I just shake my head at his antics and quickly follow her.
Within minutes we come across a set of log cabins. They are each large, cherry colored wood boarded log cabins. I spot children that are are running around the area and mothers are sitting idly by watching them and tending to other things. Around the perimeter, I spot several larger wolves that must be the warriors.
It dawns on my that this pack is really small. This is all that is their land. I hear a soft sigh next to me and turn to look at Rune. She has her hands on her hips and she is staring distantly at her pack.
"Welcome to the genesis pack," she says, "I will show you to my cabin. We don't have any open cabins at the moment, but I can set you up in a spare room of mine."
I nod my head again, "That would be great."
I didn't bother delving into the idea of sharing a caving with a female I hardly know. Instead, I focused on showering and how much sleep I was in desperate need of.
Without another word, she turns and begins down the hill towards the set of log cabins. On our way, I can't help but smile at the faces that watch me pass. They all stare at me with awe and one woman even waves at me rather aggressively and I can't help but wave back.
These people are really excited to see me..?Rune speaks up from beside me, "Don't mind her. That's my best friend Cara, and was basically like another daughter to my dad. So...She is very happy to know that you are here and are able to help us."
I don't say anything but look down at her smaller frame. That same furrow between her eye brows is back and I am suddenly filled with the need to wrap my arms around her.
I understand what losing a parent feels like but I have had many years to come to terms with my father's death. I can't even begin to describe what she must be feeling. I couldn't either at the time.
I refrain from wrapping my arms around her as she turns and keeps walking towards a cabin on the far side of the pack. We reach the cabin and step up the small staircase that leads onto the outside porch. Rune opens the door and leads me inside of the cabin.
I walk in and the first thing I notice is her overwhelming scent in here. The smell of pine trees and a scent that can only be described as pure female engulfs my sense. On the other hand, this does nothing to calm my wolf and he begins to pace in my mind.
"Um...Syron?" The voice speaks kind of loud in my ear and that's when I notice she is talking to me.
She motions for me to follow her and we reach a small hallway and I follow her down it until we reach a set of three rooms. Rune opens the last one on the right and stretches an arm as if to say 'go in'. I step right in to see a single bed, a dresser, and a door that must lead to either a closet or a bathroom.
I turn back to rune and notice her hands are in her pocket, as if she is nervous. "So uh this is where you can stay for as long as you need. There is a bathroom here and you are welcome to any food in the fridge. I know you are tired so I will leave you to your thing."
She goes to turn and I don't know if it's my lack of sleep, my overeager wolf, or my need to show her that I understand what she is going through, but I grab her arm as she turns. My hand gently grasps her sleeve clad arm and I allow my eyes to soften. "Losing a parent never gets easy, you only learn to live with it. Thank you for the room and shower."
Her eyes well with tears for a second before she gently bites her lip and turns and walks out of the room, closing the door behind her.
WOO IM BACK!! Next chapter will officially be the start of looking for her fathers killer.
