CHAPTER TWO
Mrs. Spellman dropped the boot with a thud, ‘How did the glass get into this sole?’ She asked as she hit it against the edge of a table. ‘This thing is so thick that you have to use a hammer to drive a nail into it!’
‘Beats me mom’.
‘More like cuts you,’ mom said with a laugh and I joined in laughing.
‘On a more serious note, are you sure didn’t pull off you boot somewhere the glass could have found a way inside?’
‘No mom, I had a busy day at school today, no free periods on my time table, that’s why I hate Mondays.’
’So how did it get in?’
‘Now that’s the question of the year.’
She thought about how her mother had been behaving and decided to ask her what the problem is.
‘Mom, what happened that had you unsettled?’
‘Well, I heard someone ringing the bell numerous times with nobody and nothing at the door when I checked. That is why I didn’t get to the phone earlier when Zana called and I also had to hang up on her in frustration because the bell started ringing continuously. It kind of grated on my already frayed nerves,’ she replied with a sigh.
‘Well, it seems the person responsible had stopped,’ Jaz said. ‘I bet it was just a prankster.’
‘I think it’s time you rested,’ Mrs Spellman said noting her daughter’s pale colour. ‘I’ll leave you to get your rest. Holler if you need anything when you wake up,’ she said to Jaz as she tucked her in.
‘Thanks mom, you are the best,’ Jaz said already on her way to dreamland.
What would I wear now?’ Jaz asked herself. Going through her closets, she finally settled on a pink tank top and a white ¾ shorts. She was in the process of closing the closet door when a black paper in one of the folds of clothes caught her eyes.
A black paper? How did it get in here and how can anybody come across a black paper?
Taking out the paper, she unfolded it and got the shock of her life. She dropped the paper and quickly clung to the crucifix on her neck tightly.
