One🔫
*13 years later*
Listening carefully, Amelia concentrates on the sound of hoofs walking through the forest. Her hearing has always been abnormally better than others, which is why she hated going to crowded places. But ever since she began training with Jay, she has gotten it under control and can block out most noise when she needs to.
From the branch she is currently squatting on. She zeroes in on the buck who's scavenging for food on the forest floor. Taking aim, Amelia pulls the trigger and the shot rings out in the once quiet forest. The buck instantly falls to the ground, dead from a bullet through the head. Putting the rifle on safety, Amelia slings it onto her back and hops down from the tree towards her prey.
Before she reaches the dead animal she hears a twig snap from behind her. On instinct, she grabs her 9mm from her holster, flicks off the safety with her thumb and turns around quickly aiming her gun where the sound came from. Who or whatever it is must've masked it's steps with the noise of her rifle when she shot the buck.
Now on high alert, she shoots a warning shot towards the ground. If it's an animal, it'll scurry off in fear but if it's a human it can go one of two ways. There is no sound coming from behind the bush after the warning shot, so she knows it's a human. She focuses her hearing on her surroundings and can clearly hear the quick breathing of a person.
"I suggest you come out because the next shot will not be a warning." She says coldly.
Movement can be heard as the person shuffles from around the bush with their hands in the air. Her body instantly relaxes when she sees Gabriel. Rolling her eyes, she puts her gun back on safety and into her holster before turning back around towards the dead buck. Usually, you should wait at least 20 minutes before approaching an animal you've shot to make sure it's dead. But with Amelia's enhanced hearing, she heard it breathe it's last breath a second after it was shot.
"Didn't anyone tell you not to sneak up on people while they're hunting. I could've killed you, dumbass."
"Aw, you wound me Mel! How could you be so cruel to your handsome and intelligent best friend?!" Gabriel exclaims faking chest pains.
Amelia rolls her eyes at his dramatic antics. "Oh yeah, you're so intelligent for trying to sneak up on someone with a gun."
"So you agree, I'm handsome." He says with a smirk on his face.
Sighing exasperated, Amelia ignores his statement and points to the buck. "Since you seem to have so much energy, grab the buck and bring it back to the workstation so I can prepare it."
"I don't wanna!" He says fake pouting.
"Yeah, it wasn't a question. Now, hurry up, I don't have all day!" She says walking in the direction he came from.
She knew his ATV with a small trailer attached, had to be on the trail, so that's the direction she kept walking in. Eight minutes later, she stumbled upon it and waited a few more minutes for Gabriel to drag her prey to the back trailer and load it. Starting up the ATV, Amelia hopped onto the back and wrapped her arms around his waist before he took off. It would take at least 15 minutes before they would be at Gabriel's parents farmhouse.
They've been friends for a pretty long time. He was actually the boy, she met at the airport, the day her parents died. To her surprise, he went to the school that Jay enrolled her in. It took her awhile to feel comfortable around him but once she did, they were inseparable. Her was her first, everything and their relationship now was friends with benefits. They are happy with this arrangement because neither of them are looking for anything serious.
