«fluff???»
The artificial light from your laptop screen glowed in the darkness of your room as you laid sleepily in front of it. Your head was propped up on a pillow, blearily trying to focus. In front of you, your boyfriend was talking over video chat, his low voice lulling you to sleep.
He happily recanted, "So then he pulled back the curtain, looked at me, and just went 'yeeeaah,' and I thought, 'what's wrong with this kid?'" The story tapered off into his signature giggles, and through your exhaustion, a smile found its way to your lips; he was your lullaby. Noticing how you struggled to keep your eyes open, he asked about your day— if you'd really eaten, if you felt okay, and if he needed someone to check on you.
"No no," you mumbled in a rough voice, "I'm just tired from work. I've got so many papers to grade." You sighed as you closed your eyes, hoping that a few seconds of rest would help you recharge a bit. "Keep talking, Hobi. I like your voice."
His laugh came out in a low rumble. The two of you had been dating for almost a year and a half now. The first fourteen months you'd spent in Korea together, but eventually your family decided to move out of the country. As such, the two of you had been limited to texts, video chats, and the occasional letter for the past two months. Despite making an effort to video chat twice a week, time differences sometimes made it difficult.
It was painful, and you were aware Hoseok couldn't handle it very well. He tried to hide it, but you knew he wanted to see you and to be with you. Two weeks into the arrangement, he'd admitted how he wanted to kiss you and feel his arms around you again.
"I want to stroke your hair," he had said, staring distantly at his hand, "I want to walk down the street laughing with you. But of course I'll wait for you until we can do that again!"
"Of course."
"Of course."
His smile back then had been thin. It seemed as breakable as fine china or tissue paper. In the weeks following, that unspoken promise rattled in your head. Of course. Of course. Of course I'll wait.
It made you happy, it really did, but even more than that, it hurt. You didn't want to chain him to you, knowing it would only make him unhappy. The two of you couldn't keep doing this.
Yet somewhere between your wandering mind and plates clinking as Hobi ate breakfast, the exhaustion clouded your mind, and without realizing, everything went black. Hoseok turned back to the screen when he heard your heavy breaths. He gazed at your tousled hair, smushed cheeks and fluttering lashes.
"Are you still awake, babe?" Slender fingers traced your lips on the screen. His eyes reflected the screen in longing and desire. "Can you come kiss me goodnight?" Of course he got no answer.
With a sigh, he murmured a sweet goodbye and cut the call.
"I love you."
