«JJK is a creep lol»
"It's my own fault...
but you had this planned."You shouldn't have done it — that much you knew — but it was only a short walk from here to the corner store and from there to your flat. What could go wrong?
A lot.
For starters, daylight was already fading by the time you got off the bus. You didn't expect the night to creep up so quickly. Second, this particular stretch of apartments was all bought out by college students in the area, and there were some obnoxious numbskulls that had given you trouble on more than one occasion. Everyone knew there was little worse than a pack of college boys after dark.
You walked briskly along the empty sidewalk, anxious to see the glow of that little store any minute now. A breeze blew upwind and tickled the back of your neck with chilly fingers. It felt like someone had breathed on you, but their breath was cold. Every alley, every window, every whisper of the trees, you felt someone's eyes peering at you behind the blanket of darkness. And then—
Tap. An eerily loud footstep. The sound echoed from the way you came, crisp in the autumn air. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Whoever it was, they were walking faster. Saliva began to gather in your mouth, and your throat grew strained as you too quickened your pace. Your eyes bulged in anticipation. The street lamps above you flickered with the wind.
Was it always this hard to breathe? And where was that corner store, dammit.
The street lamps shut off. The footsteps stopped too. However, the stone in your throat grew when you could feel eyes in all directions. Their gazes swallowed you like the gaping mouth of Hell, black and hungry, swallows a sinner cast aside by a wrathful god. It terrified you. Just as the total silence and probing eyes were about to cut the string that linked you to sanity, a little noise brought some clarity amid the darkness.
"Meow."
The half moon proved little help as you strained your eyes. A few feet away, you made out a black silhouette with a tail flicking back and forth. You were wondering if it was as fluffy as it looked or if it was just the light (or rather, the lack of), when piercing golden eyes seized your soul. It was as though that amber gaze had bewitched you.
"Hey," you coaxed in a whisper as you bent down and extended your palm, "Hey kitty." The cat stared back and didn't move, only watching as you shuffled closer inch by inch. You made clicking noises as you kept trying to entice it. "Come here! Come here!"
Ever so hesitantly, your hand glided over the top of its head, and soft black fur tickled your skin. Those glowing gold eyes disappeared as the cat closed its eyes and purred, pushing its head further into your touch. You smiled softly as the feline ebbed your fear. It stood and rubbed against your legs, only to stalk away right after. When it was a few feet away, it paused and looked back. The further the cat went from you, the more afraid you became; human or not, the company soothed your anxiety.
"Here kitty," you called again. The little animal flicked its tail and took a few steps, then gazed back again. Still crouched, you scooted up. This chain of events continued until you had followed the cat down the sidewalk and to an unfamiliar roadside. All at once you realized it's eyes didn't glow anymore, and you could see how fluffy it actually was. You raised your head; a single street light was lit.
The cat meowed loudly and moved to sit at the edge of the circle of light. Slitted eyes watched as a tail lolled side to side.
Tap.
Oh no.
Tap.
Tap.
Your throat constricted again, and the hair on the back of your neck raised in defense. Hard, concentrated footsteps echoed from behind the cat, and your legs wanted to run, but you didn't dare leave your island of light. Fear rooted you in place, and your body was so taught you could have snapped.
Finally, someone stopped just behind the cat. Said animal turned around and rubbed against the person's legs, purring fondly all the while. Whoever it was still stood outside your field of vision, so you squinted your eyes to make out features. Noticing this, they stepped forward. Once in the street lamp's halo, you were surprised to find a nice-looking person instead of a thug or a lumbering old man. He was about your age and had a handsome face adorned by shiny brown eyes and framed by black hair. Did he live on this street? You'd never seen him before.
"Excuse me. Are you lost?"
His voice broke the silence and caught you off guard. All of a sudden the fear-induced spell shattered like a glass mirror and you realized you were walking home; things don't live in the dark; you were fine. Your voice was still shot, and your heart was pounding hard in your chest; you just weakly nodded your head.
"It's kind of late, you know? We should get you a cab."
You nodded again, distractedly. Next thing you knew you were sitting quietly beside this man on the curb as your little friend purred and asked to be pet. You blinked. When did you sit down? Did he ever call that cab? Why was there literally no one on the street? You fleetingly wondered if he was some strange person masquerading as a Good Samaritan only to murder you later and dump your body in a river.
...Maybe that was a bit much.
"What's your name?" He asked lightly. When you didn't respond, he mumbled, "Fair enough. Don't you know it's not smart to walk alone at night? Regardless of if you're a guy or a girl."
"...Then I could say the same to you."
His eyes widened, and he threw back his head to laugh. "I was just out looking for my cat when I noticed someone wandering around. I'm not an idiot."
"And I am?"
He chuckled humorously: "Obviously."
Jeez. Your nerves had settled considerably, and you began to ask things like if he lived around here or if he was a student. He smiled the whole time, and his aura put you at ease. Except when he said something... off.
"You can't make a habit of going home late like this," he chided after you mentioned another time you got stuck at a bus stop, "I'm sure your dog will be sad and hungry by the time you get back."
You pouted as you imagined the little Yorkie whining at the door. But then you stopped. "Hey," you started slowly, "How... did you know I have a dog?"
The street lamp flickered and for the shortest of instances, his eyes flickered gold too. You noticed the cat in his lap go still. A bright light flashed in you face, and you raised your arm as a shield as the sound of crushed rocks approached. When you lowered your arm, a taxi sat before you, and the man beside you was standing.
"Oh look at that," he droned, sounding not at all surprised, "Your ride's here."
You stared up at him, a mixture of fear and a confusing warmth swirling in your chest. Slowly, like a deer inching away from the eyes of a watching wolf, you palmed at the door handle and slid backwards onto the black faux leather seats, not brave enough to take your eyes off him. Said stranger simply watched with a small smile and eyes that said he knew something you didn't.
"Have a safe night," he hummed.
The door shut, and you turned for five seconds to buckle up as the car began moving away. Looking back, the nameless man had disappeared — in his place was the golden eyed cat with its tail flicking back and forth again. His words rang in your head, but you snuffed the memory; it was just freaking you out more than you already were.
"Excuse me," you called to the driver. You planned to give him your address so he could drop you off, but when he glanced back in the rear view mirror, the air stopped in your throat.
Gold eyes twinkled back.
jesus what the fucc is this
