Junior Year

This was a project I did for my creative writing class, and I thought I'd share, because I liked how it turned out. (Plus my teacher gave it cutest moment award lol.)

Edit: I had to revise it for creative writing, so here's the revised version.

The first day of Junior year, I was not expecting to make any friends. Imagine my surprise when I made three. I hadn't had friends since last year. My old friends Ryan, Skye and Aiden changed for the worse. I mostly stayed out of it, but it was difficult. I mean, they were my friends, it's not like I could just leave them! But leaving was really the only option.

I sighed, remembering the argument we had had, and my two best buddies pretty much cut all ties with me. That's not including Skye. She liked me, and she wanted to still be my friend, but she had bad energy. She brought my mood down like crazy.

My mom had told me earlier that I needed to either talk to my old friends, or make new ones, and I was not excited. Both options seemed like they might end in disaster. But I was definitely not going to talk to my old friends.

I walked onto the campus, and looked around. Yep. Still the same old school. I thought to myself. Same buildings, chipped stone and peeling paint. Same basketball court, missing nets, and dented poles. And same people. I walked towards the courtyard. Make some friends. Mom had told me.

Yeah right.

As I moved around, I saw two kids standing around watching something. One was short and skinny, and one was tall and stocky. My curiosity piqued, I walked in a wide arc to try to see who they were looking at.

He was tall. Probably shorter than the big guy, but definitely taller than me. He was sitting on a bench making wild hand gestures. He seemed to be telling a story.

"So then, of course, Ben was like, 'Ohh Lancehas a crush!' and then I told him 'yeah, I did like EIGHT YEARS AGO.'"

I almost chuckled. I know I shouldn't have been listening in on other people's conversations, but he seemed like he had had an interesting summer. I wanted to hear about it. And the way he said it just cracked me up.

Bad news is, the big guy noticed me.

"Lance," He whispered, nodding in my direction. The guy--Lance--turned to look at me, smiling.

"Hey, come here! No use being creepy and just listening in!"

"I am not--" I started, but then stopped myself. I was listening in. And how would I know if other people find me creepy? I sighed and walked over to where the three of them were. Maybe I'd make a couple of friends like my mom wanted.

"So, what're you doing sitting alone?" Lanceasked, his lips still twisted into a smile.

When I didn't reply, his smile faded a bit. "Oh sorry, I didn't mean to make you upset or anything, I mean I know there are loners at this school but I just didn't. . .think you--"

"Lance, just stop. You're making him uncomfortable." I glanced at her and smiled thankfully. She was right, I had been getting a little anxious.

"Anywho, buddy boy, what's your name?"

I blinked.

"O-oh uh, K-Keith." I stuttered. "You?"

"I'm Lance. This is Hunk and Pidge."

They both waved, Pidgelooking bored, and Hunkwith the biggest smile plastered across his face.

"So uh, what. . .what--?"

Before I could finish, the first bell rang. I checked my schedule. I had honors English first thing in the morning.

"Oh cool me too!" Pidgeinterjected, reading over my shoulder. Her brown hair stuck up at weird angles, and her glasses seemed a little too large. They kept slipping down her nose.
