Prologue

It's weird to watch your entire life untangle before your eyes. I'm not sure if I regret opening the door or not but I knew in the second I did that it would change everything.

"Oh, Dan," she says, her hands reaching out to me. Part of me wanted to accept her embrace, wanted to feel the warmth from the mother I had always longed for. But this wasn't her; this was the women who had deserted me without a trace and had left a teenager to his own devices, expected to waltz right in without and consequences. I had to remind myself the picture of mother I had didn't fit the lady in front of me, and I doubted it ever would.

I push her hands away. She looks shocked but tries to gain her composure. "What are you doing here? Forget something when you left?" I ask, trying not to be as bitter as I wanted to. "I'm so sorry, Daniel. I had to go; it was for your own protection. I wouldn't have done it if it wasn't absolutely necessary," she says pleadingly. "And what was so important that you just up and left?" I say. "I can't tell you but-"

I start laughing. She gives me a sad look. "What do you want?" I ask, no longer trying to be nice. "I came to warn you," she says. "What? About the men in black leotards that have broken into my house twice? Yeah, I got the memo," I say, crossing my arms. "Are you okay?" she asks, suddenly panicked. "Don't act as if you care. I can handle myself," I say, "any other news you're late on telling me?" "I justed wanted to warn you that they will come back and that you need to find someplace safe before they do," she says. "So you're asking me to up and move because of something that is most assuredly your fault," I say my voice raising, "to ditch my friends and people I know behind at the drop of a hat because you ask me to? I understand how that might be easy for you at this point since you've done it so much but I'm not leaving them behind like you did to me!" She stands in shock silence; it seems like the entire world's gone quiet.

"Dan?" I soft voice comes from behind me. I spin around to see Phil standing there, rubbing his eyes. "Who are you yelling at in two in the morning?" he asks, coming to stand beside me. My mum looks over his appearance giving a distasteful expression. Well, this just got a lot more complicated.

"Well, you know how my parents dumped me a couple of years ago?" I ask, giving my mum a pointed look in the process. "Um, yeah, why?" he asks. "Well, let me introduce you to the one and only Scarlett Howell," I say, with sarcastic enthusiasm. When he figures out who it is he gives her such a cold look, it makes me realise I've never seen Phil so angry at someone.

"Anyways," I say, "thanks for the first visit in three years but we're good," I say, trying to close the door. "Daniel, please listen to me, you are in grave danger," she says. "And what do you expect me to do about it!" I ask. "You need to leave!" she says, desperately. "I can't!" I yell, slamming the door on her. I feel Phil's hands on my shoulders, turning me around. I look into his eyes, and I see empathy, but for once I'm okay with that. I'm selfish, and I want someone to feel sorry for me, for once in my life. My anger fades, replaced with sadness.

I hug Phil tightly, knowing I might be squeezing too hard but he doesn't say anything. We stand there, as I mourn for the mother I never had, and Phil doing his best to put my pieces back together.
