Eyes wide, ears open
Breath calm, heart thumping.

For now you can hear what the wind has to say. For now you can hear the shifting house and the murmur of complaints you've long since learned to ignore.

The clicking of nails on linoleum from the family pet.
The cough and sniff of a sleeping sibling fast asleep.

The tick tick tick sound of the broken clock in the corner of the room.

But the loudest sound of all were his troubles screaming in his ears. The thoughts circling in his head go around and around and around.

Slowly killing him and turning his thoughts into ones he wishes weren't his.

The darkness surrounds and cocoons him. The only thing he knows. Nights like these he listens to the sound of nothing telling him everything.

Everything he doesn't want to know. Because during these sleepless nights he wishes he could fall into eternal sleep and never wake up
