Chapter 4
I wake up to see a girl with long brown-blonde hair, green eyes, and freckles smiling at me.
"You woke up! I'm Victoria, but you can call me Tori. I'm a firstborn too. I turned twelve yesterday, but my luck hasn't really improved. I ran away from the orphanage because everyone kept shoving me away. What's your name?"
I look at my arm, seeing there was a bandage on it where the bird had clawed me. "I'm Rachel. Thanks for helping. Do you know what those bird things were?"
Tori shrugs. "Not really. The one thing I do know is when they claw you, the venom in their claws is way more painful than it would seem." She smiles. "Your body resisted the poison the best of all the people coming through here. Sure you aren't descended from a superhuman or something? Or not a firstborn at all?"
I smile. "If I was, I would just fly to the center place. My parents cast me out when I was little, so I'm definitely a firstborn. You're really nice."
"Thanks. Rachel, you're probably going to need some help getting to the center city." Tori puts her bandages she had been using in a sack. "I don't have anything else to do, so I'm coming with you!"
I give her a hug. "Thank you. I have a sword, and a bow and arrow, so I can protect us. You can be the healer, that alright?"
She points at something, and I turn around fast. "I don't see anything." I turn back around to see Tori shooting something with my bow and arrow. "You're good with that."
She puts the bow on her back and shrugs. "I used to have one that wasn't enchanted with accuracy, for when the bird things came. I wasn't bad with it, but this is amazing! Let's go save some future people!"
I pull my sword out while Tori finishes packing her medicine bag, and listen for the bird things. After she packs up, we walk quietly through the woods.
"There are some dog things too, they have a nasty bite. You run into them yet?" Tori shoots an apple out of a tree for us.
"I was able to fend them off. Nastier than the scratch of the bird things?" I ask nervously.
Tori nods. "Much nastier. They go for killing at any cost. If one of them bites you, you have one hour until it's too late to save you. Extremely painful." She slips my sword out of my hand and cuts the apple in two. "Here."
"How do you take stuff like that?" I stare at her. "I have trouble taking meat from behind the butcher's back, and you can take my sword when I'm staring at you!"
Tori smiles. "The orphanage is basically jail, and I've escaped about 20 times before this time. Not the easiest thing to steal keys."
I smile. "Well that's cool. We should set up a camp for the night. Are the bird things repelled by fire?"
Tori puts a blanket over some low tree branches. "Yes, and so are the dog things. Let's get some sleep before we get attacked. Night Rachel."
I curl up between two roots. "Night Tori."
