Chapter One

I was born with a terrible curse. My curse has almost gotten me killed several times. My mother, Oizys--goddess of pain, suffering, and misery--defied Artemis once. She told her she would never want to be like her, never being with the one she loved. Artemis was insulted. They fought and eventually Artemis cursed Oizys that the baby girl she was carrying would know the true meaning of pain, and would learn never to cause it. That baby girl happened to be me.

I was new to Camp Half-Blood when it all started. I'd known of my mother being a goddess. I'd known about everything, except Camp. Chiron had instructed a girl to show me around camp. "Hi. I'm Allie Brown," I introduced myself to her. She had medium-length blonde/brown hair and brown eyes.

"Devin Cross," she said, "Daughter of Hephaestus. Do you know your godly parent yet?"

"Oizys, goddess of misery." She smiled at me. Strange. I'd never gotten that reaction before. Devin quickly finished the tour. "So which cabin do I stay in?"

She looked thoughtful for a second. "I'll get my siblings to make you one by nightfall."

I was led to the training area. "Do you fight?" she asked me.

"No!" I said quickly. "I mean, no, I do not."

"Do you want to learn?"

"Oh. I mean, I can fight. I just choose not to," I explained.

She pointed to the fighting instructor. "You should at least practice. Just in case."

"I-I can't. I'm . . . pacifist! Yup. Pacifist. No fighting for me."

Devin eyed me. "Mm-hmm. You bothered to learn how to fight, but you're pacifist," she said, knowing I was lying. She tossed me a sword. "Let's see what you've got."

"No, thank you. I'm not very good.

"That's why you need to practice! Come on!" She pushed me closer to the sparring dummy. Well that backfired. I looked at her pleadingly. She motioned with her hands for me to keep going. "Go on...." Devin stared at me intently, wanting to know my skill level.

The conch horn sounded, signaling dinner time. "Oh thank goodness!" I shouted. I gently put the sword up and ran to the mess hall for food.

I looked back to see Devin just staring at me and watching me go with a confused and disappointed look on her face. She slowly walked to the Hephaestus table and sat down for dinner.

I ate a salad. It was good. Nothing really interesting there. When I was done I was led to the campfire. We sang songs about the gods and roasted marshmallows. Devin stared at me the whole time, as if she were trying to figure me out. Chiron introduced me to everyone. I saw Devin whisper something into the ear of the boy next to her. He began to stare at me more. Great. Another person who thinks I'm weird.

I left in the middle of a song about Hades's Underpants and went to my cabin.
