A Wish

Part 9

We all looked at tthe door, and waited for the person to come in.  A voice sprang through the room when be walked in.

"Hello everyone, I am Dr. Hew.  I will be doing daily check-ups to see if - He quickly looked down and checked the paper on his clip board- Mr. Mathews is making any progress or signs of waking up"  He finished up! and straightened his shirt.

My brother got up and walked to him.  "Thank you, Im Jason, thats my sister Claire, and out mother Maria." He shook Dr. Hews hand.

"Nice to meet everyone, if you guys need anything, please give us a call, does anyone have any questions? " Dr. Hew asked while around nervously.  He looked like he was sweating. 

"How years have you been a doctor?" I asked.

"Claire!" My mother scolded me. What did I do wrong?

"No, its alright.  Thats important information.  I have been a doctor for 2 years." He looked me in the eye. Thats not very long, in my opinion.

"Mrs. Matthews, we need to talk about financial issues." Dr. Hue told my mother.

"Kids, would you mind stepping outside?" My brother and stepped outside.  He ignored md the whole time, he didnt even look at me.

The week flew by.  They allowed all of us to stay the night at the hospital this week.  None of us left, not even to eat.  My mother hasnt went to work, I think she took a vacation week.  Today is the last day, and he still hasnt made any signs of waking up.  Jake is on his way, he has May with her. 

*Knock Knock*

"Come in" My mothers frail voice spoke throughout the room.  She was holding onto my dads hand.

"Daddy!, Daddy!, Daddy!!" I heard Mays little sweet voice.  It brought a smile to my face.  She jumped onto my dads bed and hugged him.

"Ooohh, is daddy sleeping?" May whispered.  My mother started to cry.

"Mommy, whats wrong?" May ran up to my mother and hugged her.

"Nothing, Sweetie.  Here why dont you go to the vending machine?" My mother said while taking out her change purse.

"I got it, Mrs. Matthews." Jake spoke up and took Mays hand.  While they were exiting the doctor came in.  He pointed at my mother and asked her to follow him.  They shut the door when they left.  We sat in quiet.

"No! No! You cant do this! He has a family, we need him! Y-you cant!" We heard my mother screaming.  Jason rushed to the door and started talking to my mom.

I walked to my dad and sat down next to him.  He was so pale.

"I-Im sorry dad.  I shou-should've called y-you" My voice was in hush tone.  I felt a tear roll down my face.  "Please wake u-up, I-I need you d-dad.  I c-cant make it o-out without you da-daddy"  I hugged him, tighter then I ever hugged him before.  Im not ready to let go.  He never did anything wrong! He doesnt deserve this.  All I could do was cry, until I couldnt cry anymore. 

"Give them a moment to say goodbye." Dr. Hews said.

I got up from my spot.  Jake and May walked in.  My mother walked up to my dad.  "Please, give a sign.  Please! I need you, the kids need you" She crouched down and gave him a kiss on the cheek. 

Jason hugged my mother.  He gave my dad a hand shake and then a full out hug.  "I love you, daddy.  Dont go. You taught me well.  I know you will want me to protect the family, but I cant dad.  I need you, w-we need you." He whispered.

Jake walked up to my dad.  "You're more of a father to me then my real dad.  Thank you for everything." Then he whispered something into his ear that no one could hear.  He gave him a handshake.

"What are we doing?" May asked.

"May say goodbye to dad." My mother told her.

"Why? Is he going on vacation?" May asked while crawling onto my dads bed and hugging him.

"Yes, sweetie for a very long long time." My mother answered while closing her eyes.

"Oh okay! Bye-bye daddy! Have fun, dont be gone too long! I love you!" May smiled at my dad.

I ran over to my dad and hugged him one last time.  "I love you so much, thank you, for always being there, for always making me laugh when I couldnt stop crying, for being my best friend, for being the best father you can be" I took a deep breath, then continued. "For everything, please dont leave us.  Please dont leave me." I hugged him.  "You cant go, you have to be here when we graduate, a-and when May goes to kindergarten next year! Dont go, dad."

The doctor came in and unplugged everything.

The car ride was quiet.  We finally got to the house after what seemed like hours.  I went into my dads room and took out his favorite shirt.  I put it on, then layed down and slowly drifted off to sleep.
