3 WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE TO HELL'S KITCHEN

Dear Diary,

Daddy says he's finally leaving mommy. I don't exactly know what she did to him, other than she cheated on him. Again, I don't really know what cheating on someone means. I just know that cheating is bad. He also said that he was finally able to get full rights of Stevie and me. He says we can only see her every few weekends. I don't know why mommy has to be separated from us, but if daddy wants it, then I trust my daddy.

1 WEEK LATER

Dear Diary,

I'm scared. I think mommy hates us. She made me sick and hurt Stevie really bad. The cops say she plans to kill us. I don't wanna die. And I don't want my mommy to be the one to make me die. Daddy says he's getting us out. I don't know where we're going, but I wanna be safe with daddy.

I hate mommy.

1 YEAR AFTER MAX LEAVES

Life without Max has been completely and utterly miserable. Now that he's gone everyone thinks that there's no more stopping them from attacking me at school. There have been many days where I've come home crying to my dad and Ellie about how much I've missed him and how horrible everyone is treating me. They keep asking me if they can do something about it, but I know if they do, it'll just give everyone another reason to give me misery. They especially want to take action when they see me come home hurt. Busted lips, nail scratch marks, pulled hair, limping, bruises... I've just about had it all.

But today was different.

As I was being attacked, once again by Alexa and her entourage, I heard someone yelling for a teacher. A few seconds later I heard Mr. Kendrick's booming voice from a few feet away, pulling Alexa and the others off of me. Suddenly, next to me, I heard a soft, silky voice ask if I was okay. When I turned my head I was at a loss for words.

Slick dark hair, deep brown eyes, clad in a tight-fit, black t-shirt and dark blue jeans. Can I just say he's pretty gorgeous? And he looks like a total Greaser.

"Uh, y-yeah, I should be." I replied back.

"You just got attacked by five girls and you claim you should be okay?" he asks.

"It's better than lying isn't it?" At this, he chuckled.

"My name's Ryder. What's yours?"

"Mikayla."

"Well, Mikayla, why don't I help you at least get to the nurse?"

If only I knew what this relationship would lead to sooner.

4 MONTHS LATER

"I promise we won't be gone long, dad. Besides it's only the mall and it's not even a date since Stevie will be with me." I've been pleading with dad for the past ten minutes to go with Ryder to the mall to hang out with some of his friends, but he hasn't been having it. He hasn't even been accepting the fact that Stevie would be coming along, too. Either way it wouldn't be just me and Ryder in the first place since we're meeting up with some of his friends.

"Oh, let her have some fun," his girlfriend at the time, Veronica, sympathized, "What's the matter with having a little fun at the mall? She even said it wouldn't be a date with him. Besides, it'll be good for Stevie to get out of the house."
