Would you let a disability stop you from being with the one you love?
I know he loves me even though I'll never be able to hear him say it.
We met one summer.
It started like this.
This is our story.
---------------------------------------------
My parents knew something wasn't right with me the moment I was born. The doctor told them that their child(me) failed the hearing test.
I'm a senior in high school and I've survived. My friends Marley and Andrea they were both adopted. My parents who can hear were heart broken and neither one of them at least tried to learn sign language in which I was fluent in. Its hard not knowing what the people are saying most of the time, I can barely read lips.
Every summer my friends and I go upstate to our parents old cabin. They were best friend back in the day. We would party, find love which Marley did she found a guy name Sammy who was deaf as well. Well he was the only deaf one in the sleep town.
My mom comes inside my room and her mouth is moving showing that's she's talking.
'Slow down I can't read your lips,' I sign hoping she'll understand. She slows down thankfully. I read her lips she's saying 'they're here'. I nod and she hugs me and leaves. I look out my window and surely I see my friends outside Marley's convertible with their hearing aids on. I pick my duffle bags up and walk out.
'Hey you ready?,' Marley signs.
'Yeah and hi Andrea,' I sign waving at my other friend.
'Lets get this shit on the road,' she signs, little rebel that one.
I lean against the side of car and I see the scenery, country like that's what you get when you live in Vermont.
'We are here,' Andrea signs. I sigh and get my stuff out of the trunk. I kick pebbles as I go up the pathway to the cabin.
The cabin consists of three bedrooms, basement, two bathrooms, and a huge lake in the back.
Once I'm settled I change into my bathing suit and head out to swim. I was hopping to become a professional one no matter what the disability's affect it has on me.
I walk into the lake. I swim from and back in the lake. In the middle of the lake I am oblivious to the world. Oblivious minds are the calm ones.
I tumble over in shock! My head is banging in pain. I black out.

I open my eyes to see this handsome handsome boy who looks like he's my age. His mouth is moving and my friends are by my side signing or translating what the boys saying.
'He says he accidentally knocked you over,' Andrea signs.
'Tell him I can't hear.' I sign back. The boy looks at me worriedly.
'He knows already he says he's very sorry,' she signs.
'I'm sorry for not looking,' I sign back.
'He says his name is Frank,' she signs smiling.
'Tell him my name is Violet,' I sign. My friends were adopted into hearing families which means they can speak and read lips. The boy is still hovering me.
'You guys can leave me alone I'm fine really,' I sign. I get up and sit, the boy stays.
'Why are you still here?,' I write into the sand.
'Because I'm worried,' he writes.
'I said I'm fine,' I write.
'Ok I lied I think your cute,' he writes trying his best to flirt.
'Thanks, work on flirting though,' I laugh and his chest moves up and down signaling that he's laughing too.
'Here's my number text me if you dare.' he writes.
'I make no promises,' I write.
'By then I'll learn sign language for the next two weeks,' he writes smiling at me.
'Wow eager learner aren't ya?,' I write. This continues for a good ten minutes until he goes back inside. Andrea comes outside and sits next to me.
'You just had a whole conversation with that dude,' she signs.
'Yeah I guess he's cute,' I sign.
'Ask him out,' she signs.
'No I can't even hear him how am I supposed to go out with him?,' I sign.
'I'll make it happen,' Andrea signs. I stay outside skipping stones. I go inside when Marley says were going clubbing.
I change into a tight fitting dress that makes my brunette hair pop and my hazel eyes lighten up. I wasn't the one to dress up but when I did I gussied up.
'Lets party!!,' Marley signs excitedly. We head to the club in ahead of time they have to watch me since I don't have a hearing aid like them.
I walk into the club and sit myself at the back of the club sipping on my coke. Andrea goes mingling. I feel someone sitting next to me. I turn to see Frank again. I pull out my notepad and start writing.
Me:we meet again
Frank:I guess we do
Me:have you worked on your flirting skills?
Frank:yup
He stares at me smiling I giggle
Me:why are you staring at me
Frank:your cute
Me:you didn't work on it did you?
Frank:your just saying that because your intrigued by me
Me:ok good one have you learned sign language
Frank:geez one day hasn't even pass I only know sorry and yes
Me:I applaud you for trying
Frank: thank you thank you I try
Me:so your not going to go dancing
Frank:only if you dance with me
Me:there ya go your flirting
Frank:shut up and just dance with me
We end out conversation there and he bows dramatically making me blush and he takes me to the dance floor. We dance to a couple of songs. I bump into somebody and spill their drink all over them
The person is a biker guy and he starts moving his lips rapidly showing that he's mad. Frank steps in front of me and talks to the guy. He turns around and we head out of the club.
'Text me,' I read his lips I take out my phone and text him.
Me-what did he say to me
Frank-uh that's not important he was being an asshole to you
Me-your not my bodyguard
Frank-I know just looking out for you
Me-but you don't even know me
Frank-then let me get to know you better let's go canoeing tomorrow
Me-hmmm
Frank-please answer
Me-sure as long as I don't get knocked over
Frank-I promise I won't miss Violet
Me-same to you sir Frank
I wave bye to frank and meet my friends and we head home.
Well summer romance was not something on my summer checklist
