Lights flash in my eyes. Green ones. My face opens itself brightly, when I get a tap on the shoulder. Being night, I turn around and give a karate chop to the stomach of the victim, who winces in pain. "Sorry about that, Em" I say, noticing her face. "You've gotta stop doing that, Heather" Emily says coldly, still wincing. "Hey, what if the situation actually is dangerous. I'd rather you be the one in pain, not me" I reply. Emily glares at me. "Anyway, what did you want?" I ask. "Crap, I forgot now" Emily says. The green lights still attract my attention, I feel helplessly drawn to them.
"Here I recite an old poem," says a loudspeaker, but before it can say more, the loudspeaker goes quiet. "How old is that thing?" I ask Em. "Too old. I have no idea what it's for nowadays, in fact that's the first time it's been heard in decades" she says, trying to take my attention away from the loudspeaker. "Geez Heather. Stop focusing on those things and read a book. Take my copy of Life in outer space" Emily nudges me. "Why?" I ask stupidly. "Seriously. I can't believe your even asking that" she replies, staring away from me.
Emily is seventeen. She's obsessed with books, movies and she's extremely popular. She has long brown hair like mine, only she dyed part of it blonde. "Hey, if you don't want to read, it's your loss" she says twirling her hair. "My loss, then" I say. Emily pulls out her red earphones, obviously uninterested in conversation. "Whatcha listening to?" I ask trying to make conversation, because I find myself extremely board. "Heather, can you just give me some peace and quiet, for once?" I shut my mouth as she says this, finding myself weirdly obeying what Emily says.
"Heather. Be yourself. You're acting strangely, like an asshole, to be honest" Em whispers, as if someone is listening to us. My whole body is focused on the lights. "Heather?" Em taps me on the shoulder repeatedly, but I ignore it. My phone rings, but I don't bother to pick it up. "Is he in heaven, or is he in hell" are the small words I mutter. "Seek and you shall find" I continue. "Heather, what the hell are you doing?" Em asks. "Try and try again" is the next quote I recite. "Crap" Emily says in the background.
Three hours later
I find myself in a small room, sitting in a wooden brown chair. A book sits on my lap, by Patrick Ness. A note lies in the front cover. Look Heather. Nothing's okay. You read this book and you won't be an idiot any longer. Just read it, the letter reads. I open the book slowly, and read the first page, I skip the blurb, wanting to finish the book as soon as possible. I stop for a while before I continue, trying to take my mind off the book and put it on something else. A note falls on the floor. Sorry. Your time is up. This book should've been finished ages ago. You still remain an idiot.
P.S. Neither of these letters are from friends of yours, whoever they may be.
