"Now I understand it was a lot to ask of you, but how has it been living with Styles?"

The sheriff moves over to sit down behind his desk, awaiting my answer. I nod a bit, looking up at him from across his desk with a confident smile.

"Good, sir. We're getting along really well, actually," I feel my smile grow, taking everything in from the last few days and Harry's improving behavioral change.

To my confusion, I'm met though with a look from the sheriff. Not a happy one.

"Caroline, I didn't ask you to go and play house with him, I asked you to figure out if he was the cause of the over twenty missing cases of women in this town. I'm supposed to give you a raise today for your work."

Not wanting another lecture, I decide to put my foot down. My body gravitates on the edge of my seat and my expression grows as cold as his.

"If you want to find something out about someone who won't flat out tell you, you have to appeal to them. I know a thing or two about psychology, remember Sheriff?"

His face instantly pales, his posture in his seat changing as he sits back apologetically.

I choose to make him feel guilty, watching as his mind drifts to the memory of when he, along with many other close people to me, wanted to place me in the psych ward for my reactive psychosis, the traumatic state I endured after getting shot.

"Caroline, I didn't mean—"

"Forget it, is there anything else you need from me?"

He opens his mouth hesitantly, and I know I've hit a nerve in him.

"I'm doing my job just fine, Sheriff," I inform, entwining my fingers over my crossed legs. "Just take my word for it. Harry has shown me a different side to him that you wouldn't even recognize."

"Really? You're telling me the man out there getting question who threatened my interrogator as we handcuffed him to the table just now has a soft side?" The sheriff asks in disbelief, unimpressed with my report.

I knew the moment Harry said that he would kick the officer in the crotch with his new boots if he pushed him into the room too roughly it would get thrown in my face.

Harry's a little fragile, what can I say?

"He's just not comfortable with any of you," I speak up, knowing there's no way he'll understand. It took Harry a long time to get friendly with me.

Should I even consider us friends? Is that against the rules of my job?

"Caroline?"

"Yes!" I return to reality.

"We came up with a new suggestion we wanted to run by you and get your opinion on before we made a move," the sheriff begins.

"Don't tell me I have to legally become his sister or something because living with him is enough," the sarcasm in my voice doesn't go unnoticed when the sheriff gives me a look.
