Needless to say, they all died in the attempt.  They were able to rally to the King, but the goblin response was more feral than they expected just as they arrived.  Mark's character was decapitated while Chris had several spears decorating his belly from high-level goblin's.  They were bigger and greener than the usual.

Chris opened his virtual pod feeling dejected.  Mark's pod, and a couple of others, opened as well. They looked at each other in silence before moving out of the pod. One of them went near the wall and powered up the flat screen, synched it to the virtual pod and watched the event in spectator mode.

The human army prevailed against horde. About a third of the player participants made it to the end. Chris sighed. He wanted to be there. The survivors made history, while he was just a statistic.

"Hey.  Mark." He called out.

"Look at them, Steel Dogs. Biggest clan in the server and they made it to the end. I am fucking envious." Mark said excitedly, watching the screen.

"This is it for me. I'm quitting."

"My God. Just got a message from Jack.  None from our group made it. What a pity -- Hey, what did you say?"

" I said this is my last game."

"Why?!" Mark faced him, frowning.  "Just because we didn't made it you're quitting suddenly?"

"Nah, it's not that. College. Next month."

Mark was silent for a while then began to bring. "Okay.  Make a lot of money and come back to gaming."

"You bet your ass I will." Chris grinned back.

As Chris went out of the virtual cafe, he looked back. He had spent a lot of his time there, met a lot of people and made friends. He felt apprehensive about the next chapter of his life.
