"I am sorry, Rose." He uttered as he reached for my hand but I moved as soon as I feel his touch. I shut my eyes closed; millions of his apologies replayed in my mind — like a movie where he was the protagonist and I was the extra who would only appear when he needed me.
"I'm sorry, I thought you were the one, Rose, but when I saw her, she made everything different — I never felt the same with you. I'm sorry." He said without single interruption, like he practiced this line a million times so he could not stumble.
I knew this is a movie, and he has to deliver his lines perfectly.
"What?" The only word I uttered as I darted my eyes to the sapphire eyes I am drowned into. I was too drowned, I keep on struggling for air to breathe, but then I will remember, he was my oxygen.
"Rose, I'm breaking up with you. You don't deserve someone like me." He said and paused, leaning closer to the table — perhaps thinking of the lines he has to deliver perfectly in front of me.
"You were the smartest girl in the university, and I'm an average. Being with you is like dating a royalty, people's eyes are darted on me — as if holding your hand is forbidden. Your parents look at me like I was never the one who could ever fit in your world."
A small pause, he looked at me and met my gaze.
"When I'm with you, I feel less." He continued. "Then she came and gave me all the hopes that I am enough for her; I am just right for her."
"You were always the one who would force me to memorize the periodic table and all the capitals of the countries in the world, even if you know that I don't like to do it. You would force me to score the highest in my subjects, even if you know that I can never do it. You're trying to change me."
I was left with no words to utter. Am I really changing him?
"All I ever wanted was the best for you. You should have told me to stop, we could have been away from this situation."
"No, Rose." He said in a firm voice. "You're not changing me, for me, you are changing me for yourself." Without hesitation, he raised his voice a bit, a vein popped in his neck.
"You are changing me because you are selfish."
